People dig their own holes seeking degrees where a career in that field will not easily cover the debt. It's quite striking the differences between my close friends and it really has all to do with drive and ambition. Few examples of people I know:

Sister in her 40's has around $45,000 of student debt left that she stopped paying on over a decade ago. Batchelor's in Sociology and Masters in Education from a UC. Was a university councilor for 10 years, that's the extent of her career before she called it quits and moved to Europe. Probably maxed out around $60k per year income.

Friend in his early 30's has $0 in student debt, holds a Batchelor's degree in Business with emphasis in Marketing from a UC. Has made up to $100k, and as low as $50k per year since college.

Friend in his early 30's has $65,000 of student debt, holds a Batchelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from a CSU. Makes $170k per year.

Friend in his early 30's has $200,000 of student debt, holds a law degree from a private college, earns around $120k per year, most of which goes to servicing that debt.

Friend in his late 30's has $0 of student debt, holds a exercise physiology degree from a CSU, made $12 an hour working as a personal trainer for a few years, now works making $8-10 an hour making smoothies for the past 12 years.

I have no degree, but 18 years of experience and make $120k in marketing and product development.
