The State of California has now authorized the building of ADUs or “in-law” units anywhere in the state. This superceedes or overrides any previously imposed local restrictions. Anyone with a backyard can put it an ADU rental. Tuff Shed will install the shell with permits and then arrange for subcontractors todo the electrical and plumbing. Everything to code and with permits. Multiply a months rent by 12, then divide by the cost of the Tuff and that is your Annual Return on investment.

For real? Link?

If so, this would be a real change for the California legislature. Usually they are looking to penalize working Americans!

Noooo I told my wife the only way either of our moms could move in would be in a Tuff Shed in the backyard now this is coming out wtf.

Or they are looking for a new source of Section 8 housing.

Looks like you could be buying TWO sets of Tuff-Sheds!

Sure they've relaxed the rules a bit, forcing cities to permit them. Still, building a properly permitted ADU to code with electricity, plumbing and HVAC is still going to cost you upwards of $150k in most counties.

This is the link to the CA ADU law.

TovBot, Still not seeing anything on Tuff Shed's website.
The bigger news about CA's ADU laws is a that "manufactured homes" are allowed as an accessory unit. Much simpler than trying to figure out how to legalize a Tuff Shed.

Couple of month ago while traveling throught CA desert areas I saw a 2-story building by TuffShed displayed alongside their more conventional offerings on a parking lot of Home Depot. So it does look like TS has indeed ventured into residential building market.

Only if you don’t know what you are doing.

Tuff Sheds are already legal under the law, as well as manufactured homes.

I wonder how life would be with 2 mother in laws living side by side in your back yard? Might make a great TV serial.

Most accessory structures under 120 sq.ft. are allowed without a building permit. Over that limit, though, and it gets more interesting as the Tough Sheds have no foundation. Manufactured homes are built to HUD standards, and, in general, you can't site them on a lot in most cities in the Bay Area. The new ADU code allows you to put a manufactured home on the same lot where there is already an existing SFH.

Tuff Shed will build with foundation.
