What a fluff piece. If the California DMV began asking for proof of citizenship when licenses were issued, this problem would not exist. You know why they are not doing that.

California diddled around because of illegals instead of implementing the Real ID law over time, getting extension after extension. Now they are scrambling to implement it.

Q: What is REAL ID?

Passed by Congress in 2005, the REAL ID Act enacted the 9/11 Commission's recommendation that the Federal Government “set standards for the issuance of sources of identification, such as driver's licenses.” The Act established minimum security standards for state-issued driver's licenses and identification cards and prohibits Federal agencies from accepting for official purposes licenses and identification cards from states that do not meet these standards. States have made considerable progress in meeting this key recommendation of the 9/11 Commission and every state has a more secure driver's license today than before the passage of the Act

Why not implement it sooner. Waiting for Dems to overturn?

"For some, there are privacy concerns about information that could be uploaded to that database.

"Probably would and could be used for immigration enforcement, witch hunting of people whose citizenship would be challenged," said Hasbrouck."

More than 1 million undocumented immigrants have received driver's licenses, the California Department of Motor Vehicles announced Wednesday.

Assembly Bill 60, authored by then-Assemblyman Luis Alejo in 2013, required California DMV offices to issue driver's licenses to undocumented immigrants as long as they can prove their identity and residence within the state. The law has led to 1,001,000 undocumented immigrants receiving licenses as of March 31 but doesn't give the licensees carte blanche to drive outside of California or fly across state or federal borders.

Libertarians should be up in arms over real ID

Why is that?

Passports seem to work fine for this.

The federal government is to blame. Why is the federal government requiring a high resolution image of our face? So we can all be tracked?

Face Rec works fine with low resolution images, making it higher res won't matter much.
