President Trump is exploring ways to strip several former Obama officials of their security clearances over politicized statements, including John Brennan, James Clapper, James Comey, Susan Rice, and Andrew McCabe, according to White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders.

Responding to a question about comments tweeted earlier in the day by Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) that former CIA Director Brennan should have his clearance stripped, Sanders replied:

"Not only is the President looking to take away Brennan's security clearance, he's also looking into the clearances of Comey, Clapper, Hayden, Rice and McCabe," said Sanders, reading from a prepared statement, "because they've politicized, and in some cases, monetized their public service and security clearances. Making baseless accusations of improper contact with Russia or being influenced by Russia, against the President, is extremely inappropriate."

"The fact that people with security clearances are making these basless charges provides inappropriate legitimacy to accusations with zero evidence."

Why the hell do they STILL have clearances??? They aren't government employees anymore?

Also, Trump missed a few in that list. Where's Hillary and Obama?

They remain in an inactive state [but can be reactivated by the click of a button - literally] within 2 years of leaving the position. This is for Secret/TS work.

So are you saying they don't have security clearance? It can just be reactivated at some point and they then have access to it? If that's the case, this is kind of a non-story. Why would Trump allow them access?

I did scan the story, but it was a lot of twitter captures and not a whole lot of intelligent reporting in my book. Should they have the clearance after leaving their jobs, no. But garbage smells like garbage. I think this is garbage.

This might help:

Mr. Trump’s plan to review their clearances appeared to be an off-the-cuff idea — announced just after Senator Rand Paul, Republican of Kentucky, suggested it to him — rather than a carefully considered proposal. Two of the targets Ms. Sanders cited, Mr. Comey and Andrew G. McCabe, who was fired in March as deputy director of the F.B.I., no longer have security clearances.

Former high-ranking officials in defense, intelligence, diplomacy and law enforcement usually maintain their clearances to advise those still in government, former officials said. A clearance also serves a more personally profitable function: helping departing officials get jobs at security contractors or similar firms.

Revoking their access to classified information could weaken their ability to work as consultants, lobbyists and advisers in Washington. Nearly 4.1 million people have security clearances, according to the most recent report by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, including 1.3 million with top secret clearances.

They still have one technically, but is not active unless serving on a program where it's required. Once they leave the position, the 2 year timer begins.

TS clearances have a 5 year life span before re investigation is required. , while Secret's have a 10.

This is a good first step. In six years I hope they get sued or prosecuted for their misteeds.

What they and Obama did is what a banana republic dictator would do against the opposing political party.

Nixon by comparison tried to cover up a break in that he didn't ask for at the watergate building. He didn't engage government spies against his political opponents.

I'll presume that you are correct. You've at least given a logical response versus this.....
