She was trying to make it to Howland Island from New Guinea a (2,221 nmi; 4,113 km) away, there isn't a lot of places she could have landed in a pinch.
That Lockheed 10 Electra had a Ceiling of 19,000 feet. But they were going to cruise at 10K. If a storm came up those Tropical systems could have pounded that plane like a wall of water.
Around 3 pm Lae time, Earhart reported her altitude as 10000 feet but that they would reduce altitude due to thick clouds. Around 5 pm, Earhart reported her altitude as 7000 feet and speed as 150 knots, her last location was near Nukumanu Islands which if that were the case there was no where for her to land there. But had she wrecked in or near the shallows of an Atoll, her plane would have been found long before now.
I think there are massive volumes of water in the sky that moves with storm systems like a whitewater rapid in the sky. A fast moving tsunami.
I think it's what happens to planes that disappear we can't explain. Especially in the so called Bermuda Triangle.
Ever been in a Jet at cruising altitude when they fly through a rainstorm. It's like there's a thousand people outside the plane heaving a full 5 gallon bucket of water on the plane at once. It's not individual rain drops. A solid wall of sheeting water and sheering wind at once. I can imagine some are tens of times more violent than those. Just like huge rogue waves that come out of nowhere in the Sea that sinks huge ocean liners.
When Planes and Jets met this fate it usually doesn't leave the plane intact.

Was she captured by the Japanese and held in custody and executed as a spy? If that had happened, the records would have surfaced during the post-war US occupation of Japan. There was one US Navy officer sent on an exploration mission to Japanese-held islands. He was captured and quickly executed as a spy with a warning telling Roosevelt not to do it again. Earhart would have been held hostage and used as a bargaining chip to get big concessions out of the USA.
Did she crash in the open Pacific? That is still a possibility. Frankly her navigator was not the most competent. But this is not my favorite theory.
I believe that she got lucky and landed on the Nikumaroro Islands. She eventually died of thirst or starvation.
