The Left’s Border Conflict

I loved this little nugget from an interview Vox’s Ezra Klein had with Bernie Sanders in 2015
, which has been recirculating recently on Twitter. Money quote:

Ezra Klein, Vox: You said being a democratic socialist means a more international view. I think if you take global poverty that seriously, it leads you to conclusions that in the US are considered out of political bounds. Things like sharply raising the level of immigration we permit, even up to a level of open borders. About sharply increasing …

Bernie Sanders: Open borders? No, that’s a Koch brothers proposal.

Ezra Klein: Really?

Bernie Sanders: Of course. That’s a right-wing proposal, which says essentially there is no United States. …

Good for Bernie! But you can almost hear Ezra’s sudden realization that he’s talking to a reactionary old fool!

What you have here, I think, is a perfect encapsulation of the old and the new left. Sanders has never had a problem with the nation-state; it is, after all, the foundation for any functioning democracy,
and a democratic politician will always put the citizens of his country first. His ideal left-liberal countries — the Nordic ones — are strong nation-states with, until very recently, homogeneous populations. But Ezra really does seem to have an issue — philosophically and morally — with the nation-state. Social justice doesn’t end at the border, after all. And if the goal of the left is universal equality, on what grounds does it not extend to everyone on the planet? Which is to say: why do we have borders at all? Why do we draw any distinction between the citizen and the noncitizen?

Amazing piece.

Bernie, about as a typical Liberal Progressive Democrat as you can imagine, thinks Open Borders are a Corporate Plot to lower wages.
To Ezra, White Working Class suspicions about borders are just racist uneducated moron's obstacles to ending inequality worldwide, by allowing the Third World to move to the states in Unlimited Numbers. In Ezra's world, professionals only get promotions and raises. Don't people who drive trucks get that too? So what's the problem? Only racism!

Bernie has raised money and support from Traditional Unions most of his life.
Ezra has never worked closely with people who do manual labor, skilled or unskilled, for a living. Unions to him are the SEIU and AFT.

Even Obama deported illegals. How did this become somehow racism?

And let's be honest, these are Indians we are talking about, masking their identity in shame by preferring the bogus Latino or Hispanic monikers.

Ezra Klein, Vox:

A minor journalist at a minor news outlet is "the left". ROFLOL. It's not like vox is some mainstream news outlet like say infowars.

Even Don the Lemon is making the point against Jeong, albeit not with the fervor he would battle a "right-winger".

The NYT is now a racist newspaper, but hey, I"m sure the numbers will reflect that rather sooner than later.

You mean an Editor and Founder of Vox, regular MSNBC Contributor, a candidate for MSNBC Prime Time Show Host, former WaPo Columnist

Also founded the infamous JournoList, where journos and bloggers corresponded in a secret google group to spin the narrative for Obama. This list included Toobin, Krugman, Yglesias, and other Left Wing big wigs.

Nice attempt to marginalize him as some unimportant columnist, though

Ugh, Mel, you're so ignant. You see, according to the Great philosophers of our Era, one must have power Power and Privilege....

Hey wait a minute, doesn't the NYT have Power and Privilege?

Exactly like I said. Vox is a minor news source at best. Contributor doesn't mean shit. Hell, I've been a contributor to USA today when it was big enough to matter. A couple columns in wapo doesn't mean shit. Candidate? ROFLOL. Mickey Mouse is a candidate for president every election. .

My question stands. How does a minor journalist become "the left".

That's probably true. When it comes to selling a "product" (in this case Cortez), to get success, it's always been 80% marketing and 20% quality product. In the case of the Democrat voter, it's even worse, 95% marketing and 5% quality product. Just look what the Dem voters had to choose from last cycle.

Hillary said it best:

First, to call Ezra Klein minor is silly. He co-founded Vox, and for some bizarre reason, it's a top twenty Media website. He was a national figure before that and still is now.
Second, it's a distraction from the core point, which is that the New Left literally does not believe borders should exist in their current form, unlike Liberal Democrats since, well, pretty much forever. The Democrats continue to veer hard Left.
