A San Francisco Jury awarded $289 million in damages to a former school groundskeeper, Dewayne Johnson, who said Monsanto's Roundup weedkiller gave him terminal cancer. The award consists of $40 million in compensatory damages and $250 million in punitive damages.

Johnson's trial was fast-tracked due to the severe state of his non-Hodgkins lymphoma, a cancer of the lymph system he says was triggered by Roundup and Ranger Pro, a similar glyphosate herbicide that he applied up to 30 times per year. His doctors didn't think he'd live to live to see the verdict.

Johnson testified that he had been involved in two accidents during his work in which he was doused with the product, the first of which happened in 2012. Two years later, the 46-year-old father of two was diagnosed with lymphoma - which has covered as much as 80% of his body in lesions.

He underwent training as a "pesticide professional" to safely handle chemicals used to do the job, according to testimony in court.

Johnson twice was drenched with RangerPro when spraying gear malfunctioned. Attorney Brent Wisner argued in court that chemicals in the mix enabled glyphosate to penetrate Johnson's protective suit and soak his skin, causing or exacerbating the cancer.

Johnson said he "panicked" after getting soaked the second time with RangerPro and a rash broke out on his skin.

Sounds like he failed to follow the safety procedures he was taught.....

A Roundup enema gets you on the fast track to a huge sympathy settlement, but the awards appeal process is a bitch.

Yeah, that's pretty damn unusual --- unless it was caused by exposure of the entire body to a carcinogen of some kind.

How many chances should he get?

OK, so maybe the first time was an accident or malfunction, but remember, he's specially trained to handle it.

But the second time, at what point does it change to stupidity?

Another case of needing the government to protect you from yourself.

It would be easier to just go to Baltimore City, and resist arrest, and then sue the city when you get beaten up.

Only a moron would think that money was worth the quality of life lost as a result.

Judging by all the lardass's in the US, there are a LOT of morons now days.

I don't think he's going to be able to enjoy any of that money...

This is the second time this week I've heard that people's protective gloves or suits don't protect people from much of what they think it would.
There was a lady working in a lab with Organic Mercury and it splashed on the back of her latex glove.
That was enough to deteriorate her motor skills and ability to communicate and it eventually put her in a vegetative state and died in a matter of weeks.
