I have an uncle who sprays Roundup for a living. Dude wears a full protective suit every time he's on the job.

This is excellent news.

You need to be quicker on threads, a lot quicker:

And the dude that got this settlement was suppose to be an "expert" and "trained" and wearing protective equipment, yet he "doused" himself TWICE.

So why is that Monsanto's fault??

From the quote in the article, my guess would be because they said it doesn't cause cancer.

I'm also sure the directions say it's harmful and not to shower in it.

To think a chemical that kills every living plant it touches couldn't be harmful to people shows extremely ignorance on the users perspective.

But not the companies when they claim it won't cause cancer? Well... I guess there's a difference between ignorance and lying, one obviously being far worse.

I do agree that it's proven beyond reasonable doubt that it is harmful. However it is a weed killer, so if people think they can balance the advantages with the disadvantages and protect themselves they should be able to use it as long as it doesn't harm anyone else. Most substances that kill plants or bugs are likely harmful for humans. The problem is when it's applied on a large-scale in public parks/forests etc. and when it seeps into drinking water or the surrounding environment. I would not use it. There are far less problematic weed inhibitors, Similar to the tobacco industry - they may now stand trial for trivializing or downplaying its side-effects.

They said it was due to an equipment malfunction. The manufacturer of said equipment should be on the hook too, methinks.

How do they know it was Roundup SPECIFICALLY that caused his cancer?

What does a groundskeeper come in contact with during the week? Pesticides, weed killer, rodent poisons, fertilizer, gas, oil, diesel, paint, solvents, etc. Who knows what else...

....."Johnson's job included vanquishing rodents, weeds or other non-human schoolyard pests in Benicia, a small city near San Francisco. He proudly explained that he learned most of his work skills on the job, prompting smiles in the courtroom as he told of doing away with "30 skunks; 25 raccoons, and one squirrel."

Ahhh, but it's the Roundup that caused it when he fucked up and doused himself TWICE over several years of his career...

Sure, that eliminates any other possibility....

Shhhhhhhhh... common sense doesn't fit in here when trying to demonize a big, evil corporation.

Umm, they had a trial, and a jury of his peers was presented evidence that it was Roundup?

Everyone knows Monsanto is bad, and had this coming for a long, long time. Why are you fighting for them like they're your family or something? It just comes across as sick, heartless, and creepy.

I am not sure if jury knows anything about biochemistry and if they can critically and competently evaluate the evidence which is not even settled scientifically at this point.

There is no scientific consensus if glyphosphate is a "probable carcinogen" which is group 2A, or not.

In fact, all oral studies, even at very high doses, are negative and the only in vivo mammalian positive evidence was for intraperitoneal studies at very high doses at which (cyto)toxicity is expected. This is again linked to the consideration of secondary effects due to severe systemic toxicity described above for the animal studies, which should be excluded for the classification of genotoxicity and carcinogenicity according to the UN-GHS criteria.

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5515989/

Other 2A probable carcinogens (worst case scenario for glyphosphate) are : Biomass fuel (primarily wood), emissions from household combustion; Creosotes (in railroad tiles); Frying, emissions from high-temperature; Hairdresser or barber (workplace exposure as); Human papillomavirus (HPV) type 68 (infection with); Nitrate or nitrite (ingested) under conditions that result in endogenous nitrosation (all sausages, bacon, etc); Non-arsenical insecticides (workplace exposures in spraying and application of); Petroleum refining (workplace exposures in); Red meat (consumption of); Shiftwork that involves circadian disruption (e.i. working during nights); Very hot beverages (above 65 degrees Celsius).

https://www.cancer.org/cancer/cancer-causes/general-info/known-and-probable-human-carcinogens.html

I am no fan of Monsanto, but courts deciding on scientific matters are likely to be wrong.

Dude - you do realize that millions (billions?) of people are alive today thanks to the miracle of Monsanto products making farming so much more efficient using less water, less herbicides, less pesticides, less labor and fuel to de-weed fields. Glysophate is the most widely used herbicide on the planet being used for decades. Where are all the cancer cases? Even if it did cause cancer to people that chose to swim or drink the product, I think the lives saved far outweighs the damage.

Don't forget this scandal from last year where information was withheld from the World Health Organization that debunked the cancer claims made by some scientists.

Really? What do we know?

...." Monsanto's German owners insisted Saturday that the weed killer Roundup was "safe," rejecting a California jury's decision "

Ahhh, a California jury, where everyone in the state is a victim and all corporations are evil.

....."Bayer -- which recently acquired the US giant -- said the California ruling went against scientific evidence.

"On the basis of scientific conclusions, the views of worldwide regulatory authorities and the decades-long practical experience with glyphosate use, Bayer is convinced that glyphosate is safe and does not cause cancer," the company said in a statement."

Ahhh, jury of his peers now knows more about science and evidence then professionals and empirical data.

....."Jurors unanimously found that Monsanto -- which vowed to appeal -- acted with "malice".

How can a corporation act with "malice", when the asshole doused himself in the chemical?

....."which classified Roundup's main ingredient glyphosate as a probable carcinogen"

Ahhhh, I see, a "probable" carcinogen.... Doesn't get anymore definitive and scientific than that.

Are any of these below "probable" carcinogens?

Sure.... blame it on the Roundup....
