My mom use to have a bar in an area that was taken over by Mexicans in LA . Cops in those areas are already shaking down businesses. She had to do the police and firefighter raffles and other things or they would harass and try to close her down. They also were constantly trying to get her to make it a cop only bar, she said they were as bad as the gang bangers and drug dealers.

Collecting 2 pensions for not working at 55 isn’t enough?

They carry guns, make arrests, and wear shiny, star-shaped badges.

But these Los Angeles County Sheriff’s reserve deputies are paid virtually nothing, accepting a paycheck of just a dollar a year.

Now some of the volunteers will be part of a new task force of reserve impact teams to bring down crime in the eastern part of the county served by the Industry Station, Sheriff Jim McDonnell announced Friday.

The crew of up to 15 part-time officers will focus on burglaries, robberies and vehicle theft, and will assist other deputies with traffic violations, serving warrants and writing reports, McDonnell said. The boost will address a slight rise in crime in the area, he said.

I think it's a bad idea to have poorly paid or unpaid cops from the general public. It's an invitation for corruption. To prevent corruption:

* Pay cops very well, and publish those salaries so that many people want to be cops.
* Be extremely strict about cop ethics and discipline so that cops know there is a long line of willing replacements for them.
* Preferentially hire former US Marines.

Both a carrot and a stick. And Marines for the loyalty and duty ethos, probably the best of any organization.

"Another reserve, Debbie Iketani, is on call 24/7 as part of the all-volunteer San Dimas Mountain Rescue team, and serves as a DUI instructor and drug recognition expert in addition to her day job.
“My passion is to take impaired drivers off the road,” said Iketani, a real estate agent"

Realtor with a badge and a gun - this stuff is straight from horror movies.

I think it’s drop program related.

For some to collect 2 pensions, someone else has to go unpaid. Only way finances balance.

This is exactly what BART needs, in BART stations and on BART trains.

You need BART donut cars, attached to every BART train. You will have enough cops there.

Yes, the pension situation is way out of hand. The accumulated liabilities are beyond reason.

I think cops should be paid very well while they are on the job, not forever after they leave the job. The point is to give them something to lose, such that petty bribes and rackets are just not worthwhile.
