Imagine if those beer drinkers back then could experience what we do with refrigeration ! That's what I think of when I read about ancient beer drinkers. All of the modern conveniences would blow them away, but especially the refrigerator.

The lack of refrigeration actually created some of the most popular beer styles we know today. Hops were added to beer traveling to India in order to keep the beer from spoiling as it traversed the Cape. Hence India Pale Ale. Russian Imperial Stout's I believe have a similar story. Marzen beer was fermented underground in large caverns underneath orchards, where the shade kept the earth cool. It was only style that could be brewed over the hotter summer months, and was ready in October, when it was consumed as part of a little German festival.
