Hi, I used firefox to log on to this site to make a comment.
It looks like the gui changed a bit since I last used the site.
I cannot find a button to log off.
How do I log off?

Click on your profile picture in the top right corner and there is a "logout" link.

Thanks. The link didn't appear on my GUI with Firefox. I will try Safari.

I'm not sure what the point would be since the site is http. I hope you're not re-using a password from anywhere else.

If you don't want to bother that much by searching the logout link, you can simply close the window.
I did the same, and now when I'm back here I see that I need to login again to answer.

I could make the logout link always visible below the user name and icon in upper right. Would that be an improvement?

You either have your browser set to clear cookies, or are using TOR.

Am I deluding myself when I switch over to https? (Verified by Let's Encrypt). Don't know how our fearless leader stores the passwords, but my impression was at least they are sent over an encrypted link.

Read the TOS. He sends them all to Russia for reverse hacking of emails and bank accounts.

You didnt think he'd run this website for free did you?

@patrick why dont you use (enforce) https? It would be good for your users who may not be sophisticated enough to understand the ramifications of their passwords being sent in plaintext.
12   Patrick   2018 Sep 26, 7:59pm

@Hircus if you type https you get encryption, but certificates can be revoked at any time, so I leave open the possibility of using http.

I guess I should force them into https, but that is also giving our evil owners more control over how things work. And they are not going to use that control for our benefit.

The passwords are all stored md5 hashed in the database. I myself don't even know that they are, and even when transmitted without https don't give people any idea what the password actually is. But if snooped upon, the hashed password would let them pretend to be you on this site, until you changed your password.

I will look into this on Saturday. Should totally be possible to log in without changing your password.

I wasn’t aware it was a lazy cert design. Https is secure.

Most of us have the opposite problem. We log out, at least for a while, but sooner or later we log in again.
