I never understood that at the time. What was the big deal of going "Yeeeeaaragh!" at a Rally to pump up the crowd. It looked a little silly but it wasn't 2 minutes of coughing at every stop or calling half of America "Deploreable".

Now I think it was a great example of when media was still powerful enough to derail a candidate on behalf of their preferred candidates, like John Kerry. Turn a nothing burger into a huge conflated gasbag of "Temper" and "Suitability for Office".

They've lost that power now, and they desperately want to bring that power back, becoming more and more pushy and prone to confirmation bias fuckups, which actually makes it worse for them.
