A recent Uber trip where the driver was from Afghanistan.

The fellow had applied for admission to the USA in 2014, and got in in 2017. Pretty quick, but he was the owner of a construction company who worked for the Americans. Lived in Kabul his entire life. Said the country went down the tubes after Russia invaded. That war devastated the country, from which it never recovered Claimed that Pakistan benefited greatly after the war ended. And the disintegration of the economy led to the instability that exists today.

Driver said he was a Persian, which makes up 35-40% of the country. The slightly larger population is Pashtun. Then Uzbeks, Balochs, and other groups. Said the killing of women and children by bombers is horrific.

Was very wary of Russia. Said the country was growing more powerful and was intent on taking over countries in the Middle East. Disliked Pakistan, which couldn't be trusted.

Agreed that the country would be a hikers paradise if there was peace. Said the mountains are the reason why the country would never be subdued.

Glad to be in the USA. Encouraging his kids to get educated and to become professionals - doctors, engineers - to give back to society. Driving for Uber while planning to start his next business.

Added bonus (from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soviet_withdrawal_from_Afghanistan):

Botshan-Kharchenko: You must understand, Mr. Buurdon, that these attacks against our troops as they withdraw must stop.

Bearden: And if they don't?

Botshan-Kharchenko: Then perhaps we will halt our withdrawal. Then what will you do?

Bearden: It is not what I will do, Counselor; it is what the Afghans will do. And I think they will simply keep on fighting and killing your soldiers until you finally just go home.

Botshan-Kharchenko: But you have some control over such matters.

Bearden: No one has control over such matters, Counselor, except the Soviet Union.

Botshan-Kharchenko: Mr. Buurdon, you must still understand that there will be consequences if these attacks continue.

Bearden: I am sure there will be, Counselor.

The USA does not want to be there. We want Afghanistan to stop being a terrorist haven so we can leave. It's the fucking Pakistanis that want Afghanistan to continue being a terrorist haven, as that gives them control over the area, and allows them to continue receiving American aid. It also allows Pakistan to send terrorists and suicide bombers to India and other countries.
Fucking Pakistan needs to get their butt kicked.
