National? Last time I checked Detroit was still part of this nation and Greyhound buses were still running. Until the above changes there is no such thing as "national unaffordable housing problem".
Can we blame Prop 13 too? Many retired people in my neighborhood stay in their homes because they pay practically no property tax. Bump that up to $20k/year and they'd be freeing up that housing immediately.

Sometimes when we say "state" we mean nation state. But in this case state means for example, California or Arizona.
Plenty of cheap housing in California too. SFBA, LA and SD is not whole CA, duh.
