National? Last time I checked Detroit was still part of this nation and Greyhound buses were still running. Until the above changes there is no such thing as "national unaffordable housing problem".

Your shack would lose three zeroes if it was in Detroit, and they still would not qualify for a loan. I mean, how much money can you make in Detroit when the only job they are willing to do is steal each others food stamp?

Overly restrictive zoning is definitely a huge problem in the bay area.

I think that the biggest problem is that too many high-tech businesses have gotten too big. Even if housing doubles (like it sure looks like in Sunnyvale with enormous new rental complexes) then the traffic will become more impossible than ever. Everything is stressed by the overwhelming quantity of people. Lines out the door at the post office, 15 minute wait to check out at Safeway, etc. Just this morning I had to wait through 2 light cycles to make a turn at 2 different lights — that is occurring at a more regular basis. (Worse, it meant I listened to NPR for an additional 5 minutes and that was almost too much to take!)

Can we blame Prop 13 too? Many retired people in my neighborhood stay in their homes because they pay practically no property tax. Bump that up to $20k/year and they'd be freeing up that housing immediately.

Proposition 5 that is on the ballot this November is designed to allow seniors to take their prop 13 benefits with them if they move.
It will allow them to move, downsize, and live in a sparsely populated part of California.
Just vote "Yes on 5"

Sometimes when we say "state" we mean nation state. But in this case state means for example, California or Arizona.

Plenty of cheap housing in California too. SFBA, LA and SD is not whole CA, duh.

There is Fresno, Bakersfield, Barstow. Even the homeless bums refuse to go there.
The problem is, everyone wants to live where millionaires live, but no one wants to pay for it.

If you can't afford to live where you want to, shouldn't you just live where you can afford to?
