It is more complicated, and just because some crazy people think that fossil fuels are bad, does not mean that these fossil fuels become good. Reason for avoiding them though may be different from one put forward by far let/environazis. I'd say Venezuela, Saudi Arabia, and Russia getting most of their income from oil/gas is good enough reason to look for alternatives (even if we disagree on global warming). Without oil these countries would turn into shitholes which they richly deserve to be, and would not be able to foster terrorism, attack neighbors, and spread their Islam/communism/whatever.
HOW to get away from fossil fuels is a different question altogether. I think nuclear is the immediate answer, and R&D to make other ways of generating energy economically feasible.

Not a fossil fuel, but still the largest source of atmospheric carbon. Refined fossil fuels burn comparatively clean.
