LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - BMW (BMWG.DE) is considering a second U.S. manufacturing plant that could produce engines and transmissions, Chief Executive Harald Krueger said on Tuesday, shortly after a report that U.S. President Donald Trump would impose tariffs on imported cars from next week.

Krueger in an interview at the Los Angeles Auto Show also said he backed British Prime Minister Theresa May’s current Brexit plan to divorce the United Kingdom from the European Union.

“The compromise on the table is something I can clearly support,” he said. May is drumming up support for the divorce deal with the European Union ahead of a December 11 vote in British parliament.

BMW is considering changes to U.S. operations as sales in the region grow, Krueger said. BMW has a U.S. vehicle assembly plant, in South Carolina, is planning to open a Mexico factory next year, and is considering changes to its current scheme of importing engines and transmissions.

“We’re at the range where you could think about a second location” in the United States, he said, adding that such a factory would provide a natural currency hedge.

The real reason is the 45% mandatory $16/hr bit as part of the Trump renegotiated NAFTA. If BMW put all their parts manufacturing in Mexico they originally planned, and only assembled them in South Carolina, they've been slapped with a big fat tariff. So now they have to bring those parts making jobs to the USA.

And of course BMW wants May's False Brexit, since Germany has 50%+ of the UK Automarket under the 4th Reich German Colonialism Plan. If the UK was free to sign trade agreements with the US, ROK, Japan, India...

What's interesting is that BMW doesn't want to build more plants in Germany; of course not, they have expensive workers and benefits there.

The reason foreign car companies even build cars in the USA is to avoid tariffs; the threat of imported car limits and tariffs caused them to build many of their cars in the USA.

Threats of tariffs created thousands of factory jobs for Americans.

Exactly.

And the reason Companies pay billions to reduce borders for people and goods is to eventually eliminate the possibility of tariffs, so they will simply move wherever the wages are lowest and the handouts the highest..

It all comes down to this. Canada, China, EU, etc has ALWAYS levied tariffs against the U.S. They do it to gain a competitive advantage against the US in their own domestic markets.

Yet when we do the same it's "Hurting the economy, against free trade, fascist".

Okay Democrats...

The Chicken Tax is a great example. West Germany and France have had 50% tariffs on US Poultry long before Factory Farmed Chicken or Hormone Injections; the latter were just the excuse to utterly ban Chicken decades later after they first tariffed the hell out of our chicken. It's entirely to protect their inefficient farmers from US competition.

Frankly, the light truck tariff isn't enough (and GM just admitted the truck tariff was why they make light trucks at all in the USA). We should counter the now EU ban on poultry (which includes Ducks, Geese, etc. that aren't factory farmed) by banning ALL French Wine and German Beer until they lift their tariff.

We have a 2009 X5d that was built in Spartanburg and has generally been trouble free except for a little problem that wasn't BMW's fault. The dealer screwed up.
