I can tell you what changed.

I graduated college in late 1995. Conservative leaning state school through probably the 70's. When I attended there was a mix and to my eye, there was not only no retaliation for conservative or liberal points of view, it was actually encouraged. I even remember one business course where we openly debated politics. One girl in my class who I think had a mild interest in me was SHOCKED at my political point of view. But she did not hate me, or even hold the political view against me. We got along and worked together in a couple other classes And while most of my courses were business admin related, I also had a healthy amount of liberal arts classes. I never felt any qualms about expressing my point of view including political or religious. The worst group on campus was La Raza(the Mexican American student union). They were openly racist and socialist. But guess what? They were a bunch of marginalized effeminate nerds who no one paid attention to.

This happened six years after I graduated:

I'm not sure this would happen in todays political climate. Maybe an attack like that would be like throwing a glass of ice water in the face of the millenials. Maybe. But somehow I doubt it.

What is VERY true is that I'd likely be excoriated in the liberal arts courses were I to attend the same college courses today. Actually, probably not. Theres really no way I could express my actual political point of view. And I'd also shut it in my business courses.

And thats sad because I hold several liberal points of view nowdays, most notable a strong(though probably ultimately futile) belief in the First Ammendment. Certainly that drugs ought to be legalized, though again I suspect futile as the true facists attempt to take hold. Simply what has taken place is that near militant haters of free speech, people who feel justified in dictating what beliefs are acceptable for others to hold. Theyve found friendly administrators and professors and used that to push forth a freedom hating agenda.
