Mortality rates were a lot worse hundreds of years ago with 80% of babies dying in the first year.
I remember reading an article years ago where a Doctor in England a few hundred years ago who delivered babies, noticed the survival rate greatly improved when hands were washed prior to delivering the baby.
Simple things can make a big difference.
