I was reading about requirements more than a year ago.
California simply screwed up and now blame shutdown. Fake news!

That article was surprisingly content free.

Anyway, I had heard (elsewhere) that California uses your on-file mailing address as the 2nd piece of address verification. Therefore, when getting a Real ID™ you only need a single additional document for address verification. I heard that the feds are having an issue with this and that California should be requiring 2 documents to prove address. So... people who got a Real ID already might find out it isn't honored. Further, they may have the joy of going through the process all over again in the future — this time with 2 address documents. Also, it's not possible to get credit for supplying 2 documents even though only 1 document is requested; there is no way for the worker to note that you indeed already supplied 2 documents.

For people not in silicon valley, you might not be aware of how painful getting Real ID or even renewing a regular drivers license can be. You can use the DMV website to schedule a DMV appointment so you don't have to wait as long at the DMV. When I tried to get an appointment at my local DMV I asked for any time slot on any day of the week; the first appointment available was 3 months from the current date. Naturally, the DMV only mails you a notice of license expiration 2 1/2 months in advance, so by the time you even get a notice about license expiration it's too late. So, stay on top of the expiration date printed on your drivers license and don't wait for the notice. You'll have to figure out for yourself if your renewal requires an eye test (trip to DMV) or if they just one money and you can renew by mail.

I was able to make an appointment at a different DMV (figure 40 minutes to an hour driving each way) that was a single day before my license expired. I schedule that one. Not wanting to wait and let the issue go up until the deadline, I then found a different (fairly close) DMV that only does license renewal and Real ID. This is the one at 2222 Senter Road in San Jose across from the Costco. I waited until it was raining one morning and arrived at that DMV a 6:30 AM; after waiting 1/2 an hour in the cold rain outside, I was one of the first in and was done by 7:30! The last time I had to renew license in person, I did more-or-less the same trick but at a DMV that opens at 8 (thus arrived at 7:30) plus that time it wasn't raining; so, in that case I waited about 5 hours and lost a day of work.

”Fake news” as in it isn’t true, or as in you support the shut down and have no plans to fly?

Government serves a purpose, but the fucking DMV in any state is a shit show for the most part. The fact you're bragging about it taking an hour and sitting in the rain? If you spent 15 minutes in a checkout line at Target or Walmart every time, they'd be out of business. Not knocking you, just the fact a high income earner out there is paying 13% state income taxes alone on the top end and it sounds like the DMV is a shit show. Where does the money go? Which I think is what you're getting at.

I'm in somewhat rural IL and am probably one of the first people on the internet to say this, but my DMV location is boss. No appointment setting or anything. Usually in and out in 10-15 minutes, unless it would be a physical driving test for a teen or another class license. I still don't get with all the tech we have, that you need even visit a DMV. This will be the only credit I give to IL, but I do think they've gotten better with why you "need" to actually visit a DMV and the process is smooth (by me).

Regarding the ID thing though. You should have your passport regardless. My 5 and 8 year old have them. No excuse for an adult not to have one. Privacy is a thing of the past Fight where you can against it (not having privacy), but realize by 2100 you'll probably need to insert your wang into a tube as a form of fingerprint instead of a body scanner.

So get your Global Entry (international) or TSA pre if you don't travel internationally. Makes life mucho, mucho easier at the airport.

Not California, the other Big Blue State:

I don't think if anybody support shutdown. Shutdown is the EFFECT of Budget Discrepancy.
What is Fake? : California is not up to date with Real ID because of Shutdown.
For my vacation/travel I use a passport most of the time, anyway.

This. Even domestically I'll generally have a passport, drivers license and FOID card. Never have had to use the FOID card as ID, but I do believe it would work, at least an IL one. Also have a global entry card. I hate airports, but much rather fly than drive, even if it potentially takes longer to fly. Wife and I fly to St. Louis frequently. Even with no checked baggage the flight (drive to airport, parking, getting out of destination airport) ends up being a similar time as driving but I'll take flying 10 out of 10 times. That drive is so boring and monotonous if you know it.

I'm no longer 19 and going on my first road trip. Let someone else do the driving (flying) so to speak.

Target line can be about that long. :-(

The local Safeway can be a zoo after work (around here the "after work" zoo hours extend to about 8:00 PM) The checkout lines usually run half-way down each isle. Maybe 10 to 15 people waiting.

And then there's my local Costco. You know it's going to be busy when there's a line of cars waiting on the street just to get into the parking lot. I'll give the store some credit, though, as they usually have every single cash register open and enough extra helper people also. It's just that the store is swamped.

Ah. I miss the old days!

Whenever people show support for government taking over all of healthcare (we're practically there already) I just ask them how they like their DMV operation. Of course the counter-argument is that, somehow, government takeover of healthcare "will be different this time." Yeah... it'll be a lot worse AND instead of needing to deal with it a few times per decade you'll be dealing with it a few times per year.

It's because of "housing crisis". We need to build more and denser housing! Not enough people can afford to live in Sunnyvale.... Wait, what?
