Rutger Bregman had not really intended to stick it to the global elite. He never meant to have a pop at the idea that inequality could be solved by philanthropy or inviting Bono to Davos. But when the Dutch historian decided to go off-piste at the World Economic Forum and tell the assembled billionaires they should stop avoiding paying tax, he became an overnight social media sensation.

“It’s been a crazy week and just for stating the obvious,” said Bregman, when asked about a panel discussion at the WEF last month in which he said the issue was “taxes, taxes, taxes, and all the rest is bullshit in my opinion”.

I don't agree with everything the guy says but I'm glad he said it.

Nevermind about "Checking the rise of nationalism" or aggressive donations to push Abortion or paying shills to write articles about "Pegging males" or bemoaning people getting sick of Rapefugees on Benefits.

Just pay your fucking mild taxes and stop the aggressive tax avoidance with inversions via shell companies and all that bullshit...

and everything will be fine.

If the top 1 percent gave all their money to the poor, they would all just be poor again in a thousand years.

Try 30-70 years, at the most. Before the invention of Nuclear Weapons, major wars had a cycle of about 70 years. Major wars took place largely because of economic problems/conflicts that could not be resolved peacefully. In countries where education (instead of commerce) was the primary path to social climbing, like France, the frequency of revolution and war was even higher: starting with French Revolution, revolution and regime change took place every 30 years or so.

We're probably due for a Civil War.

Reality reminded me of the song by Fear "Let's have a war".

There is an economic paradox;
lower numbers of workers=more rights, better pay, better bargaining position. War=kills off lots of workers, but the survivors benefit.
higher numbers of workers=competition for wages, lower wages, worse bargaining position. Peace=too many children who grow up to be worker drones.

Of course immigration of new poor workers just completely fucks up the balance to the detriment of the workers. They understand this instinctively. Government interference with women's ability to breed and survive without a male partner further exacerbates the problem.
