https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2019/02/04/an-american-crypto-anarchist-fled-country-he-was-just-killed-mexicos-murder-capital/

Bathed in the sunlight of Mexico’s dry season, his dreadlocks tumbling down his back, a man who went by the name “John Galton,” an apparent nod to the hero of Ayn Rand’s “Atlas Shrugged," observed almost two years ago, “There’s pockets of freedom all over the world if you’re willing to live in freedom.”

Galton paid a high price for that freedom. He was gunned down Friday by a band of men who stormed his home in Acapulco, where he and his girlfriend had found safe haven from drug charges in the United States, as they explained in a March 2017 video interview with the conspiracy site Press for Truth.

Joining a community of like-minded expatriates, Galton had sought to build a life as a self-made man. He advocated drug liberalization and taught classes on cryptocurrencies. He was set to be featured in a documentary called “Stateless.”

He envisioned himself as a prophet of American entrepreneurship — but freed from the constraints of the American nation-state.''

The comments are the most interesting part.

Just one more example of the harm that the libertarian cult causes.

In a true libertarian system, drug wars and other turf battles would be commonplace. Despite Ayn Rand's "utopian vision," why compete "morally" with an opponent when you can kill him?

"Taxation is theft."
False. Taxation is the trade-off for society. Living outside lawful society has other costs, potentially far beyond a percentage of income.

Mr. Galton found this out the hard way. He believed, naively, that he was protected from the worst because he chose not to hurt others. Ms. Forester is now paying for her hubris, begging people to save her from self-imposed exile.

This story is the old Hobbes vs. Locke argument, distilled to deadly outcome. Hobbes appears to have won this round. While I hope those responsible are caught, I also hope this helps others understand that there are costs associated with every choice. A choice to abandon society is also a choice to abandon the protections of a lawful society.

Even in "Atlas Shrugged", the protagonists were always protected by society even while hiding from taxation and striking. How different the story could have ended if armed assailants had found the place the wealthy industrialists were hiding before the government. It likely would have been a much more enjoyable read...

I don't think that these people understand Ayn Rand at all; she abhorred anarchy and corruption. Going from a prosperous society to the murder capital of Mexico is not using one's intellect.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

'Ayn Rand' and 'intellect' in the same sentence. Wow. Our boy sure didn't get killed by anarchy. This is exactly what capitalism without government looks like.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

So don't stop spouting your nonsense, randroids, but please just realize deep inside that unless you are already extremely wealthy, most likely, you are less John Galt than a pathetic sheep like this guy, and you will be at the front of the line for flensing if our incipient vulture overlords do away with the governmental protections that protect you like a fetus warm inside a womb

.Ayn Rand, the Russian atheist who worshipped greed, lived on American government-issued welfare checks and died penniless, is now worshipped by Evangelical Christians and anti-government Capitalists.
Death has a way of taking care of everything, one way or another, it's just too bad that the stupid make everyone else suffer on the march to the grave.

This is a more detailed account of the "anarchist murders " in Acapulco then I have seen anywhere else. I spent a lot of time in Acapulco over the years and I know the area they were living in. Even before Acapulco became the "murder capital " of Mexico when it was safe and locals were not getting shot there every day a Gringo would have to have been insane to do what they were alleged to be doing there. Now, locals get murdered on the beach for selling t shirts and cheap jewelry without paying off whichever gang controls the area and these Americans were high profile about themselves. I feel bad for them but any Gringo who goes to Mexico and lives there cannot do anything that " disrespects"[ which is how they would see it] the locals in their gang controlled areas and expect to be allowed to do it. I hope that anyone who knows the woman and other man who was there gets them air tickets back to the US ASAP because if they are still there the gang is gonna realize that this is making big news and they are witnesses and probably know some of the attackers from the neighborhood. There are many areas here where Gringos cannot go into a neighborhood that is gang controlled and do what they did in Mexico.

Just some more free people exercising their freedom. He should appreciate it. I hope he understood where they were coming from before they killed him.

The girlfriend reminds me of the wretched females that went off to help populate the caliphate, to breed fighters and now want home to Germany, England and Australia.
Leave them in the desert and leave her in Mexico.

Quien no la debe no la teme, right? Mexico is a beautiful country filled with beautiful people, and I hope to spend a good chunk of my retirement there, but the absolute last thing I would ever want to do would be to get involved in the drug trade there as an independent producer. I think someone really bit on the Randian/Nietzchean ideal of overman, mistakenly applied to himself.

It was my experience as a Foreign Service officer serving overseas that many Americans came to the countries in which I was stationed in search of some kind of “freedom” and, perhaps, a Shangri-La. Most were naïve. They were often fed up with the society in which they had lived in the U.S. and thought that living abroad had more benefits because people weren’t so “up tight”. This was especially true during my assignment in India. Young Americans like the people in this news report spent winters in Goa and then migrated north to the mountains in summer. They consumed ganja, hash, and other narcotics and were oblivious to local laws about drug consumption.

During my years in Tehran (1970s), we used to send consular officers to the jails in Mashhad (eastern Iran) to visit incarcerated Americans. Many were arrested at the border, coming from Afghanistan and carrying varying amounts of opium and other narcotics. Some were clever and had secreted their contraband in car gas tanks. The Iranian border patrol was on to this and would often invite the Americans to have lunch while they inspected their vehicles. They had learned the difference in sound between a full tank of gas and a tank that seemed full but had packets of hash or opium in them. They would use a stick or pipe to tap on the gas tanks and listen to the resonance. Those tanks that were not filled with gas got closer inspections and when the drugs were found, the Americans were arrested.

Of course, Americans foolish enough to carry drugs into Thailand and Singapore and were arrested faced a possible death sentence. Often, local border police were in cahoots with drug lords using foreigners as mules and would get a cut of the drugs confiscated.

Galton, Henza, and Forester seem to fit this profile. That they were attacked and Galton killed indicates to me that they had trespassed on another drug lord’s territory. Their hubris got one of them killed, one wounded, and the other fear stricken.

So he went to Mexico to grow pot there independently from whatever cartel controls that particular territory? He survived for incredibly long time, considering.

Why do they hate honor amongst thieves?

That is what I was thinking. He was taken out because he was growing and/or dealing marijuana in an area that was controlled by a Mexican drug cartel. And he did not play along with this which resulted in him shot dead. Possibly the local police were part of this.

And the women all were beautiful
And the men stood straight and strong
They offered life in sacrifice
So that others could go on.

That's what happens when you go to a shithole country.

Mexicans are like our socialist idiots like Bernie Sanders but to the extreme; they envy therefore hate anyone who has more than they do.

The other attribute is they dislike foreigners and particularly Americans. They believe the USA made Mexico poor.

The safe way to live in Mexico is to stay in hotels; you don't have to deal with the general population much.

Being a tourist there can be fun; living there can be like a never ending episode of the Twilight Zone.

I think it's wrong to blame the guy for being a victim, although he may have been naive.

It's what happens when Anarchists don't grow up after graduation and realize their Liberal Commie Teacher was an idiot and an Asshole.

He figured He has hate for Donald Trump and since Mexicans has hate for Trump too. He could make a go of it, growing pot in the murder capitol of the planet.

clambo says

Not quite grasshopper, but this statement most certainly applies to certain commenters on the forum who I shall refrain from naming lest I be accused of some degree of treachery or worse.

It seems though the comments have gone mostly over the heads of many here but such is the nature of things

The first thing I thought was

"Gunned down by a Cryptocurrency rival or his hired hitmen"
