My ability to even see my iPhone hotspot from my laptop has been steadily degrading for some unknown reason. This is a problem because I like to do work on the train, and it's hard without internet.
Apple's official advice is to log in both your iPhone and Mac laptop to the same iCloud account, but: a) that's annoying, because I don't ever want to be logged in to iCloud b) it didn't help
Works well. I have to leave Bluetooth on on both the phone and laptop for maximum convenience, but OK. Now I can just click the Bluetooth icon on the laptop, pick my phone, and 'Connect to network', and blammo, connects instantly.
In spite of being dickish in lots of ways, Apple also does some other things very well.
