It's a fantastic book for those curious about the early US Navy, including brief biographies of Decatur Sr & Jr., Gates, Hazard Perry, but focuses on Commodore Bainbridge. Additionally, it explains the history of North African conquests by blood soaked Muslims, their butchery of Christians, their eventual conversions of the Berbers, the rise of Ottoman Sponsorship, and the huge and long history of North African Pirates and Slavers who basically ran the Med uncontested from 700-1700.
Jefferson was actually ferociously anti-Tribute, who regularly argued it was better to fight than pay.
Tons of gems of knowledge, and it's written in an easy, flowing style. I cannot recommend enough.
