You decide, America. Think long and hard.

Americans would run out of avocados in three weeks if Trump shut down the border and imports from Mexico were stopped, said the president of the largest distributor and grower of avocados in the world. https://t.co/5pB7xIKLGu

I'll take an intact border, please.

Got an avocado tree next door. Anyway, they grow just fine in California.

Yup. Easy decision. I'll take the shut-down borders please.

They could just ship them in with the meth, coke, weed, stolen gasoline, etc. and the "immigrants" could each bring in a few lbs. Problem solved.
Americans should never have to from suffer lack of guacamole.

And they come from Chile, too. Mexico doesn't have anything we really need except cheap labor. And isn't that a liberal crime if we aren't paying hard working Americans a fair wage first? I'd gladly pay 2x for every avocado if it meant more Americans citizens had fair wages.
5   theoakman   2019 Apr 2, 4:51am

Yeah, and the price of avocados in mexico would collapse. They have a severely limited shelf life. Mexico would be the loser in this scenario, not us. Not our problem. It's better we obtain our produce from domestic producers anyway. The FDA has no jurisdiction in Mexico.

Also...the article states: "Mexico is the largest importer of U.S. exports of refined fuels like diesel and gasoline, some of which moves by rail. It is unclear if rail terminals would be affected by closures."

That has a longer shelf life, and is more vital to their economy. Who do you think wins this standoff?
6   Y   2019 Apr 2, 5:25am

Trump if one considers mexican losses as a form of paying for the wall. Pay for the wall or suffer losses. Either way its money out of their pocketbook.
7   whitewater   2019 Apr 2, 5:36am

All actions, including inaction has an effect. There will be some that gain from the action and some that benefit.

A collapsing country from no border control or no avocados for a year. Easy choice. We are sure to hear louder bell ringing as this continues. But in the end, it will be country collapse vs X. And what could X be that is greater than country?

The military were once taught the order of priorities : God, country, family, self. Other than God, what can be greater than country?

ABC News had a reporter on site at El Paso showing a parade of Mexicans crossing back over the border returning to Mexico after a days work in Texas. I believe ABC was trying to emphasize how closing the border would cause harm, but I wonder if Americans seeing the report saw instead how employers are undercutting wages with scab or cheap foreign labor. Where the hell are the unions?

This is part of the general trend of the Left abandoning labor. And it is why they're losing ground to populist movements or anyone who signals worker-friendliness.

The new Left is not supporting policy to create economic conditions favorable to domestic production. They're instead paying illegal labor less than minimum wage to clean their houses and raise their children, then taking a employee rights-crushing Lyft to work where they get down to the business of devising new ways to create an unholy alliance between banksters and Silicon Valley.

Their vision: one global populace of interchangeable workers, replaced with robots wherever feasible, and total control of all information pathways to quash any attempts to create or maintain local or sovereign self-government.

And ironically, they seem to see workers as disposable cogs in the system and unions as obstacles to automation and outsourcing. They seem positively outraged that a common worker should demand a fair wage! Apparently only the elites deserve to live above the poverty line, or people who got there first like themselves. Anyone coming after them should just accept a life of permanent and abject misery.
@kakistocracy
And then they wonder why Americans are rejecting their party!
Obviously because they’re a bunch of racists!

Why are you so hell bent on importing things from people working for slave wages?

Democrats have always been the party of slavery. How is this anything new? They can’t own brown people in the USA anymore, so they own them in other countries and get rich by shipping the products or their labors here to market.
Mess with any part of that and they’ll have a problem with you.
16   Bd6r   2019 Apr 2, 12:39pm

Common sense solution - fining employers $Trillion for each employed illegal and incarcerating/expelling members of caravans and their organizers is somehow not considered.
P.S. I think the WALL! is a boondoggle to distract attention from solutions that would actually work.
17   Tenpoundbass   2019 Apr 2, 12:41pm

Ban Avocados we don't need them as some proxy to argue why we should let Liberals destroy our country with illegal immigrants.

Fuck Avacados they are disgusting green phlegm fruit.

So you don't want Mexico to pay for the wall?

Who gives a shit about a measly 5-10 billion? It is said that the country is in debt multi trillions of dollars......for those mathematically challenged, 1 trillion = 1000 billions....5-10 billion is pocket change for the usa...And yet it's the main focus of the dems.
5-10 billion is probably a weeks worth of bombs we drop on other countries...lets build a wall with it and let some people live another week...also the wall isn't going to build itself...let that 5 billion be spent on labor building the wall.
19   theoakman   2019 Apr 2, 3:31pm

True to some degree, but it also gets people talking about the possibility of imprisoning the employers of illegals, the best solution.

Another benefit: all kinds of American companies that have been happily outsourcing to Mexico to take advantage of lower wages and environmental laws are going to get nervous about not being able to keep their supply chain running.

This is excellent, because even the worry about the supply chain will discourage future dependence on Mexico by US companies. Trump does not even have to actually close the border to see a benefit to US workers from the mere threat of doing it.
22   HeadSet   2019 Apr 3, 9:06am

Another method would to stop money transfers from illegals back to Mexico.

wtf are they worried about, in 12 years, we can grow avocados in 35 states right?
30   WillPowers   2019 Apr 3, 10:03pm

Mexico is scrambling to comply with Trump's wishes to secure the border, afraid Trump will make good on his promise to shut the border down if the president of Mexico fails to stem the tide of refugees. Instead of attending to the northern border with the U.S., El Presidante is securing his southern border. Will Trump do it. Just do it!

No hipster no

No avocado no

No goddamn civilization-crushing Guardian avocado no no no

NO!

Sorry, I hate avocados. But they do seem to correlate with........

I guess correlation isn't causation. And I shouldn't hate on a fruit (or vegetable or mineral or whatever this abomination is) just because it gives me severe stomach aches.

It's amazing that some people don't understand that threats are all part of negotiations...If you don't do this, I'm going to do this...Trump threatens to close the border and people instantly go into a self imposed fake panic. They imagine all kinds of dire consequences just because of a threat...NO AVOCADOS! lol

The avocados is going to hit the fan if Trump closes the border, he will be committing political suicide so please Trump don't flip flop on this one.

People are gonna be like, holy shit, we close the border for a few days and all this shit happens? Now I see why NAFTA is a bad idea, we're dependent on a Narco State for basics, that's pretty fucking stupid and dangerous.

"He ain't gonna use an Executive Order"
etc.
