Jobs, schools, zero state taxes, decent housing within 30 minutes, limited city culture, and outdoor activities.

Otoh its douchy as can be. It's over 100 degrees for 10+ weeks in the summer, and this city really isnt much compared to big cities. Downtown real estate here is stupid expensive for the benefit of not driving 15 minutes.

zero state taxes
Property taxes make up for that.

And the fact that Austin is populated by crazy, purple-haired libruls.

Dont forget the homless who come from all over the country to live in austin. Theres probably a permanent tent dwelling every 50 ft downtown, every few acres in the parks

It only takes one Mayor to go the opposite direction on that. It happened to Hollywood Florida.

Now no local City Culture or outdoor activities and City sponsored free Concerts, and Festivals. Just cheesy crappy restaurants and crappy bars nobody knows nobody and there's no Civic pride.

Does any large or even medium sized city still have civic pride these days?

People in austin love saying how much they love austin, but they seem to show it by hating on someone. Its dense, douchy behavior

As usual, I'm perplexed by the article's ratings system.

Austin scored 9 points on "net migration." Since when is overcrowding a benefit? I'd rather live in a great place with stable population, not one creating its own problems related to population growth.

Austin also scored 9 points on "desirability," causing it to take top spot for most desirable place to live. That sounds like circular logic to me: Austin is desirable because it is desirable. No... the sum of OTHER scores add up to being desirable.

Leaving those two scores out, Austin's other scores weren't all that hot. (although the weather sure is!)

Austin was great in the 80s and 90s.

Isn't this basically ... a university town phenomena where as a result of the UoT presence, that the city has a lot of activities related to collegiate activities?

And thus, Austin TX is a warmer version of Madison WI or Ann Arbor MI but with great Texas barbecue.

Holy fuck has that place become a shithole. In less than a generation.

Austin has great food. I do worry that it's going to become another SF or Santa Cruz.

I think Austin is nice for a small city. Small cities are nice until they grow large I guess.

I was just there for a week a couple of weeks ago; I stayed in an historic residential street which was interesting because I could see the downtown buildings a couple miles away but I was on a tree lined quiet street.

I walked around often and there are lots of young people working in high tech so it was more vibrant than the Florida New York geezer scene for sure. Austin is laid out for walking around the parks and Town Lake, it's nice.

The problem is Austin will become a victim of its own success; the swimming holes and fun places now will be pretty crowded come summertime.

Few cities are comfortable in the summer, and Austin is no exception. But, people seem to tolerate it.

As no tax places go, Austin is pretty nice. I'm not much of a city dweller and so I get annoyed easily by traffic and crowds.

My host took me to places to eat here and there and the young people jammed them, all spending their high tech salaries on the over priced food. It was fun however.

Austin is much larger than both of those. It is not univ town anymore. Clownifornians ruined their state, and now they have come to Austin and have ruined a perfectly good city. Next they will try to ruin all of Texas.
Ain't it beautiful - fuck up your own state, run away, and bring voting and policies that you ran away from to the new place. Kind of like locusts.

Yep.
California is ruined by too many people wanting to live there.
Austin is ruined by topping the 'Best Places to Live in the USA' list for a third year.

Yes it has. When I moved here in 1985 it was a blast. A beach with ample parking, plenty of white sand open beach. The broadwalk cafes were all Mom and Pops that actually worked the joints. Now parking is a nightmare, You'll end up feeding the meeter $25 if you stay for four hours or more. Used to just let the meters expire and pay a $15.00 violation, then stay all day once you saw the ticket. The Cafe's now are all shitty Corporate Food with hands off owners, probably don't even live in America. Most all of the beach is an extension of the business or the hotel in front of it. I could go on and on, it's not no where near the same.

I miss the City Sponsored Festivals and Concerts in Young Circle park with YC Park was another casualty offered up to developers. Now Young Circle is being developed with High rises circling the whole circle. Pretty soon it will all be private property and there will no need for the public to park or go near there. Security guards will be out in force towing people away.

Even PRL sucks now, a Shotgun Shack bar that served beers from all over the world. Had a Folk Rock/Blues/Jazz vibe. It was the last bar to close in Hollywood closed at 6am. Now every time I go in there they kids playing Trance music on Mac notebook. People drink one beer and get the fuck out of there. Used to be a great haunt.

This is why I prefer colder climates ... less chance for Californication.

Both Ann Arbor MI and Burlington VT are striking distance from Canadian hoeing destinations. With the money saved by living there, one can install an indoor pool for the winter seasons.

Yup. How about the boom boom Twerk Fest at night? All the street Arabs* running around shreiking.

There are also Tommy Tooters everywhere. I turned my back for one second to grab my water bottle out of my bag and Rainbow Jangles the wino/pedo was trying to talk to my kid..

Once upon a time it was a Middle Class hangout.

I brought up a little rental place up north. Old Florida vibe. Not as party, but a block from the beach and lots of stuff for the kids and 30 min for Orlando. Melbourne Area.

*Not actually Arab, this is a Jamaican term for parents who let their kids run around after 10PM outside until the wee hours, like third world barbarians.

I stayed in the Jimmy buffet experience hotel in Hollywood FL. Lovely boardwalk and beach.

The hotel was a legit overpriced nightmare. All the american bog-box, none of the service or actual quality. Food was like eating at chili's on an off-tuesday. Drinks were dripping w simple syrup, especially touristy drinks like margaritas. Fat people everywhere.

It didnt exactly have the high class vibe that the $500/night tab would imply.

“Best places to live” lol

Those agenda filled articles are not to be trusted.

Sounds like you got the experience the hotel advertised via their name. No need to complain here
