Apprehensions and denials of migrants at the nation's southern border hit 109,144 in April, the highest number in a single month since 2007, according to federal data released Wednesday.

The figures further illustrate the challenges facing the Trump administration as it seeks to crack down on illegal immigration at the U.S.-Mexico border and prevent a flow of asylum-seekers from entering the U.S.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) said it apprehended 98,977 people and turned away 10,167 others at the U.S.-Mexico border last month, a more than 5 percent increase from March's 92,831 apprehensions and 10,888 turn-aways, according to the released figures.

A majority of those apprehended were traveling in family units, showing a sustained pattern of Central American family migration to the United States despite efforts by the Trump administration to curb such migration.

CBP officials apprehended 58,474 people traveling together as families in April, up from 53,205 the previous month. ...

Border Patrol Chief Carla Provost told the Senate Judiciary Committee on Wednesday that care for migrant families and minors is hampering the agency's security role.

"I joined the Border Patrol nearly 25 years ago because of my strong belief in our border security mission," said Provost.

"I could never have envisioned that today agents would spend at least 40 percent of their time as child care professionals, medical care givers, bus drivers and food service workers," she added.

The Trump administration has sought to tighten border controls and interior enforcement as a response to the sustained flow of Central American asylum-seekers.

And the administration is asking for billions in emergency border funding to compensate for the border agents' increased humanitarian workload.

But that's set off a confrontation with congressional Democrats who admit there's a humanitarian crisis at the border, but are reluctant to give President Trump money that could be used for enforcement measures they regard as cruel.

Build the fucking wall. Then they cannot dump themselves on us for free care and feeding.

Remittances are a top 5 source of income, both government and private, in Mexico.

And Mexico taxes the shit out of them, too. Maybe we should start levying a 20% tax on remittances?

Wow, highest since 2007 !

So you're saying they were higher in 2007 ?

I wonder why this wasn't much of a story in 2007 ?

Just an observation.

Don't get me wrong. I get it. You want farm workers, McDonald's Employees, Landscapers, child care workers, cleaning ladies, and all others on the lowest tier of jobs in America to get paid a little more. (perhaps you have the fantasy that it will trickle up ?). Or you somehow think that too many people that want these jobs aren't able to get them when they have to compete with illegal immigrants.

Okay. I feel ya.

For some reason though, I can't get even one tenth as excited about it as you and all the the other Trump Cucks do.

I guarantee that Trump doesn't give a rat's ass, but he does know how to get votes from idiots and racists.

Because it wasn't controversial. In 2007, both parties agreed illegal aliens were bad and that more walls were good, and so we held each other's bipartisan hands and built more walls.

But now, team blue flip flops and lies to its base so that it can take a stance against a "Trump campaign promise", causing an escalating battle that gets lots of attention.

I guarantee that Trump doesn't give a rat's ass,

Trump seems to be the only one who gives a rat's ass. Establishment Reps and Dems give it the same casual dismissal that you do.

Sounds a bit snobby, like these peasants who work such jobs are beneath your concern. Best to sacrifice these peons for the sake of cheap labor and leftist votes.

It has been a story for a long time. Go to C-SPAN website and search for footage of Boxer and Feinstein trip to the border. Listen to what they had to say.

UPD: I'll make it easy for you: https://www.c-span.org/video/?c4744467/senator-boxer-senator-feinstein-attorney-general-reno
