Instant and inexpensive translation is coming, from any language to any language. It’s only a matter of time.

Will direct instant communication via the internet begin pushing us toward a common worldwide culture that supersedes borders?

Maybe you have a lot in common with a group of musicians in Italy that you never would have spoken to before. At the moment it’s still a bit of a pain to even chat with them. It won’t be. It’s only a matter of time. Any major language or dialect - even any written material will be understandable in seconds.

How will governments, religions, and corporations feel about this? It’s just one person chatting with another. Why should they care?

For instance, Will China allow anyone to speak with anyone in Kansas City? Right now I have a hunch that an alphabet of six thousand graphical characters may be a bit of a stumbling block that the government of China can rely on to spoil the free-chat party, but soon it won’t be.

A hacker could have fun with this. Make sure the Chinese reader sees the translation of "No Trespassing" as "All Welcome." "Shoplifters Will Be Prosecuted" could be "Free Store."

Fuck, we can’t even keep Americans who are born here from taking a dip in the socialist/totalitarian pool. They’ve gotten the idea that it’s the moral ideology to adopt. That people should have equal outcomes regardless of talent or work, that people deserve free and easy lives for just showing up with their hands out. That anyone who criticizes this idea is hateful and should be punished.

I have hope that one day the toxic ideology of communism/Totalitarianism will be fully exposed rather than spoon fed to kids as if it hasn’t been completely debunked in the 20th century.

Marxism has been rebranded from class to gender/race.

No surprise here. Those who did take a dip in the that pool usually don't want to do it again. Americans who are born here didn't experience that crap, while livelihoods of Bernies of the world depend on convincing them that grass is greener over there.

There are indeed exceptions among those who weren't born here. Those exceptions usually come from cultures that use either religion or state propaganda to blame US for their problems. Some of them succeed in putting anti-US chip on the shoulder of weak minded, and the weak minded continue to carry that chip even after they move to US.

It becomes easier to insult people because we don’t communicate very civilly when we speak anonymously online anyway? That’s interesting.

Still, one of the reasons it will influence people is because advertising (for example) works.

We’d like to believe that singing and dancing cheeseburgers only influence kids. The evidence though is that every last age group and demographic of humans is influenced by advertising.
Sometimes it’s wide angle smooth camera slider shots of Mercedes loft curve reflections rather than cheeseburgers, but the result is the same.

Metaphors in literature can do it too - Independently of language.
