A five percent tariff on all goods coming from Mexico will go into effect on June 10, and will gradually increase up to 25 percent until the illegal immigration problem is resolved, US President Donald Trump has announced.

Invoking the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, Trump said the US will start at five percent, but keep ratcheting up by another five percent every month, culminating with 25 percent beginning in October.

This, after the Mexican government asked Trump for $10 billion to boost their economies in response to the migrant crises.

I thought Trump reached a trade deal with Mexico and Canada after long negotiations.

https://www.atr.org/trump-reaches-deal-mexico-canada-end-tariffs

But of course Trump is not an ideologue. He's not pragmatist either.... More like an impulsive kind of guy.
It's like "Hummm what am I gonna do today???"... "Hummmm let's screw with wet backs at a bit"...
"We reached a deal few days ago?? Who cares? Let's throw this away and start a new."
There's no possible deal with Trump, because he's not consistent.

One way to look at it however this move seemingly doesn't benefit any lobby so why. Because there's a real crisis at the border and until Mexico is serious about apprehending their worst instead of shipping them over and also sending back travelers from further south instead of letting them straight through into the US this won't be solved. It's like the immigration problem in Europe albeit on a smaller scale. Still we need Mexico to act now and we know they don't want to keep any of the Hondureans etc. so they need to apprehend them at their border and send them back. Enforcing quotas is the only way for regulated and beneficial immigration.

Disagree. He's been planning for the Presidency since at least the mid 1980s and everything he does has been gamed out.

Unpredictability is a strength, and renegotiating NAFTA did not protect Mexico and Canada from US Economic responses when they pursue other Policies which hurt the US, like allow themselves to be a nexus for illegal border crossings, which Mexico absolutely does, stopping only a token amount of Central Americans, while forbidding them from settling down in Mexico. The Liberation Theology Orders of the Catholic Church --- NOT the (((Usual Suspects))) --- is the one funding hostals supporting the migration into the USA.

https://quodverum.com/2019/04/95/threads-on-imigration.html

I urge all to read the above piece, very lengthy, but full of picture proof - it explains the story of a migrant, how the Federales mix shakedowns with non-enforcement, the role of the Church/Lefty Groups, Corruption in Mexico, etc. Written by a Spanish speaker himself.

A weak neoliberal like Jeb! would use NAFTA as a false reason why Mexico shouldn't face retaliation for participating in a border crisis. NAFTA does not provide a excuse for immunity to retaliation for Mexico's enabling of mass migration, in this case mostly not even Mexican.

By the way, the reason Brazil got woke is because the Liberation Theology dominated Catholic Church in Brazil is hemmoraging membership to Pentecostals and Evangelicals, who are becoming right wing voters.

Brazil also has problems with the far Left and Feminists who support Favela Gangsters and fight attempts to gun down gangsters, while the left wing politicians absolutely rollic in corruption (see the Olympics for just one small example).

Closed Mexican businesses and Mexican workers thrown out of work somehow magically translates as a 'tax' on American consumers? Wow!

"We can't secure our borders, we might have to pay $1.05 or even $1.25 for something at the Dollar Store! Are you Crazy!!! We just have to have more talks where the Mexican Politicians know in advance we won't actually punish them for non-compliance."

It's amazing that will the constant and resounding defeats on not just new attempts but of old (almost enshrined) policies, as well as constant and hyperbolic nasty attacks, that Trump is still President and sill moving his Agenda forward, and yet people think he's just some kind of super Lucky Happy Amateur getting by on pure luck.

It's far more likely he knows what he's doing.

Note the near absence of leaks, just for starters.

The former Italian PM, Renzi, and the current Canadian PM, Trudeau, are in major trouble. The UK Prime Minister was just ordered out in an emergency session of the Conservative 1922 Committee. As are former Presidents and their key supports in Brazil and other places. Quite the opposite is happening from the false reality trying to be imposed by the Media.

Trump is basically a super genius Dennis the Menace, a good kid, but mischeivious. A master of the Dark Arts but with a George Washington Ego - wants to make an honorable legend of himself.

He's not moving his agenda forward. He's moving back and forth, making a lot of noise, but he has achieved NOTHING on either trade or immigration so far:
There are still thousands of refugees entering the US illegally on a daily basis, and tens of millions of illegal immigrants.
The US has still a very large trade deficit with every continent save Antarctica.

He's doing everything possible without the support of Congress (and most of the Federal Courts), which he never had - neither now, under the Dems, or under the Ryan Congress.

As there has been since the 90s. Every attempt to use Presidential Powers without the least Support from Congress, is met with aggressive Neoliberal Lawfare to place injunctions and restrictions on his Enforcement. Just getting the common sense "Muslim Ban" on immigration from war-torn countries where Jihadism is a major player, to stick took almost a year or more of supressing Lawfare attempts to stop it.

Which is being worked on. It didn't start a few years ago, it's been blowing up since the 80s (really took off in the 90s). It won't be fixed tomorrow, especially with most Dems and still a third of the Republicans vehemently opposed.

See Amash and Romney as examples.

As Lincoln said of Grant, "I can't spare this man, he fights".

That's how I feel about Trump. Nobody even tried before, so I'm not abandoning him, even when his attempts are met with stiff opposition and endless sabotage from other branches of government.

I'm not ditching Grant for another useless McClelland who looks good, is loved by many, but gets nothing done and has ulterior motives.

Your argument was stated so intelligently and it was informative as well insightful. Really I must pay attention to what you have to say more often.

Oh, in case you libtards don't get it, I was being sarcastic.
