What are Deepfakes?

A combination of the terms “deep learning” and “fake”, deepfakes are synthetic media created using deep learning technology. Synthesizing images, video, or audio, may have no obvious nefarious purposes. However, manipulating media using the images, videos or voices of real people pose moral and legal concerns.

Deepfakes can portray people performing actions they never did or saying things they never said. Basically, by feeding the models hundreds to thousands of target images, deepfake algorithms learn what someone’s face looks like from multiple angles and in a variety of expressions. Through training, the algorithm can then predict what the target individual’s face would look like mimicking the facial expressions of someone else. A similar process is used for training a deepfake algorithm to mimic the accent, intonation, and tone of someone’s voice.

Furthermore, the technology requirements to run deepfake algorithms are low. Any motivated individual with a mid to high-grade consumer PC and enough storage space can create deepfakes. To learn more about deepfake algorithms, check out the open source programs DeepFaceLab and FaceSwap which are both available on Github. ...

While many people are familiar with photoshop and the ability to alter images, deepfake technology, especially voice mimicry, is unknown to almost everyone outside of the data science and machine learning fields. Manipulated audio or synthesized speech can be used in virtual kidnapping scams where victims are often targeted through social media and receive phone calls demanding ransom for a loved one. ...

The problem, Watts explained, is that as media technology grows, audiences are more deeply engaged. Coupled with high engagement, it is incredibly difficult to refute a falsified video after it has been watched. The two clearest dangers Watts emphasized are the targeting of U.S. officials and democratic processes, and the incitement of physical mobilization under false pretenses.

Remember how Wiener and others claimed "My device was hacked" when found to have compromising materials? Now they have a new excuse - if they are caught "open mic" telling a donor the truth while lying to everyone else, the pol can claim it was a "deep fake,"

I believe this poses the same danger that any other poorly sourced story does. People who edit video should be able to spot these, so as long as we're not reactionary when we see a video... oh crap!

That wasn't even Obama's voice.

And as for using other video source material. No two pictures have the exact same angles.
Doing so would be easy to spot, I'm sure it would be easier to task AI to match Deep Fake video up to the source photo or video source.
That's the Stuff AI is great for. That's the type of things I praise AI for. AI will never be the all Knowing HAL 2000 no matter how much they hype it.

BTW the Project Veritas Google expose video pretty much confirms what I have been saying all along.

The person in the Video said that the Filters are not AI that is so Woke it can distinguish what is acceptable Woke language and what all else is hate speech.
He said there's an army manually plugging in algorithms for things like Hillary's squeaky clean wholesome Google Suggestions vs the Google suggestions for Donald Trump.
Those keywords are not auto generated from top ranking queries.

Just wait. I hear assassination dark markets where you can bid anonymously to have celebrities - or your neighbor - whacked are just around the corner.
Deep fakes may soon be the least of our concerns.

Yes no doubt they will cause panic and pandemonium. Especially for those that are reactionary.

More reason not to watch ANY media, except for pure entertainment. If I don't watch, I'm not getting fake news. All I need to know are what are the actual results of policies, regulation, etc. All the rest is gum-flapping noise.

This has got to scare the beejeezus out of News Media. Everything can be faked. People will just stop watching - no ad revenue - death ensues.

Btw this was done by a person

Same as the AI video. I'm sure it takes more human effort than they are leading on to. The AI just probably executes a script and puts the sound and images together in a movie clip. A human still would need to be skilled at using the software.
