As a housing affordability crisis deepens on the West Coast, a new style of living, one that reminds millennials of their college dormitory days, is springing up in cities across California.

A PodShare membership allows millennials to sleep in any of the 220 beds at six locations across Los Angeles and one in San Francisco. With no commitments nor deposit, a bed, a locker, WiFi, a personal television, and a communal atmosphere is included. Food staples, like avocados, cereal and ramen, and toiletries like toothpaste and toilet paper, are also included in the flat rate.

Elvina Beck, 34, established the company several years after the financial crash of 2008, told CNN it's a perfect solution for millennials.

Residents must adhere to house rules, one being that lights go out at 10 pm each night, and no guests are allowed inside.

It's actually not a bad idea.... for a hotel. Have stayed with a group before in a bunk room in Chicago for 4 people. Makes it cheap.

If they're paying $1,200/mo to actually live there then maybe they really didn't get rid of lead paint. Per square foot that's an insane price.

Pretty smart idea IMO. Kinda like a membership to Hostelling International, but seems geared more towards people who stay put for a while, opposed to frequently moving travelers.

Am I the only one who thinks free avocados is hilarious? Millennials and their avocado toast lol.

Beds seem pretty small less snoring with young skinny people, but ya a few bad snorrers and this would be hell. Why don't they make them like Japan so that the actual sleeping area is like a closed off pod.

Somebody is going to gain 100 pounds eating free ramen and avocado, collapse their bunk, and crush the person below to death.

When I stayed in a hostel in Hawaii with a friend a couple of years ago, we had cute young girls sleeping in my room. I didn't like it because I felt that I couldn't be at ease, I always had these girls around, like bratty sisters who didn't talk. Then, we had "The Snorerer", a big Polynesian guy. He was the nicest person, but stentorian, you could hear the rails and the walls vibrate. They passed him around so nobody had to be around him for more than two nights in a row.

When on a retreat many years ago, I was bunked with a bunch of guys who ALL snored. It was the weirdest phenomenon, because they would literally trade off in their snoring tenor, baritone, and bass, with one guy who did snorting percussion. I couldn't believe it, it was a snoring barber shop quartet. I didn't get much sleep.
