$60? I pay $30 for Comcast Internet (not 1Gbps, but who the fuck needs 1Gbps at home?)

I pay $70/month for (theoretically) 100mbps. Realistically, I’ve seen benchmarks to around 55mbps. Which is pretty great, really.
Spectrum if you’re wondering.

Where I live, it's Comcast or nothing. :-( I could see that city-run could work better and low cost, since Comcast faces no competition, either.

Maybe internet should be treated like a utility. 50 years ago, phone service was treated like a utility. Maybe now it's reasonable for internet service to fit that roll.

Comcast faces no competition

That will change when 5G rolls out.

Sonic is expanding in the bay area, sometimes reselling at&t fiber. Prices are terrific. I have a friend who just replaced comcast because she got 1gig symmetric fiber for $40 a month - no joke.

How would this help? It's not like actual utilities are cheap in CA.

Honestly, it's not hard to beat Comcast.

Nah, but should be easy to find. This is a promotion they run regularly: $29 for Internet only, no TV, must provide cable modem. Lasts for a year then they offer to extend for another for $10 more, I talk them back down to $29. When that is over, I unsubscribe and my wife subscribes. Rinse, repeat.

UPD: Look for "Performance Plus Internet" offer on their website.

Comcast will be gone or become a wireless data service reseller after 5G becomes common. Will city employees agree to be laid off when the city's wired data service becomes obsolete?

Unfortunately, nothing beats Comcast in my area. It's Comcast or smoke signals.

Is it realistic to expect 5G to be competitive with wired connection? I'd be more than willing to put an antenna on the roof. Note that the density of homes and the density of consumption of its is enormous in silicon valley. I just don't think 5G will scale to that level.

They are already putting up 5G repeaters around certain urban areas. From what i hear, there are going to be a crap ton of them.

It's $35/month in my area, plus it's only a temporary promotion that is $75/month after. It would be cheaper to pay an extra $20/month to Cricket so that I can use my phone as a hotspot.
