I had a neighbor who is a veteran, and advertises it at every opportunity. He 'retired' at 38 after 20 years with a pension that has now paid for 42 years (more than twice as long as he 'worked') In addition he gets medical treatment at VA hospitals, has gotten three college degrees paid for, and even had a 60K per year part time job at the local vet's center for many years. His baseline income has allowed him to be a dilettante in life, and he has spent years travelling the Atlantic and Pacific on boats.

Admittedly, not everybody lives to be 80 but I would say the benefits were disproportionate to say the least.

Yes, I have a cousin who worked as an accountant for an East Bay county and told me he has a really sweet pension from that.

I think it's very common, a huge leak in the tax revenue bucket.

It would be interesting to see how much of our tax money goes to pensions, by government agency.

Cops and firemen get rich pensions in California, but I know any "white collar" worker in city, county, state govt. job in California has a huge pension.

California is a great state to retire in if you are a former worker for the state, county, or city therein.

For everyone else, it sucks because you are paying their rich pensions.

I would go on with some personal experience but I'll stop here.

Their pension formulas are much worse - teachers usually can not retire after 20 yrs. Heroes in blue and city hall workers on the other hand have retirement so good that it is bankrupting cities

Pretty much what I've heard I have a buddy that makes about 90k answering phones for the cities 311 information line he is on vacation 3 months a year and will be able to get his pension in his 40s. City workers are the worse especially the closer they get to city hall administration.

They get 2 pensions. Garcetti bought that vote nicely with that bill that lets them get paid for 5 years while on pension, all they need to do is claim they have injuries (no proof needed). The fraud is so obvious, it's like out of a bad Hollywood movie with an easy and obvious cheats.

Just shows there is no morality, everyone who got to power stole whatever they could get away with. Most common way apparently was pension spiking.

We need to remember this when all of the California Democrats start running campaign ads to raise our taxes and eliminate Prop 13 with a bazillion propositions ostensibly to pay for infrastructure, schools and to clean up the bum shit and needles in San Francisco and Los Angeles.

Every time we raise taxes in California, we are just volunteering to give our money to the union protected bureaucracy so they can retire early with fat benefits.
