One guys comment in 1974 from which you infer the reason gold futures exist ?

The reason is it was totally natural once owning gold was legal, to have gold futures contracts for hedging and or speculation. A contract is successful if enough people trade it to make it a liquid market (i.e. the bid offer spread can usually be maintained as small). It was successful becasue a lot of people traded them.

That guys comment is irrelevant.

I've got some cash sitting in one of my IRAs, looks like a silver ETF might be a better place for it.

Gold has quadrupled since 2000 but silver has only tripled . . .

Might be a good idea. WE know Trump wants inflation. On the other hand some predict deflation at some point.
