Patrick.net is an online forum with a politically incorrect bent and skepticism of conventional wisdom.

Patrick has a specific political platform. You are more than welcome to use this forum to argue for or against the specific points in it.

There is no editor. Users choose what to post, what to comment on, and what to like or dislike. Patrick.net has been banned by Amazon for political incorrectness.

Patrick.net is not a safe space for anyone's feelings. Nothing on this site is censored by Patrick except:

  • personal threats or incitement to violence
  • personally identifying information
  • ad hominem attacks
  • child porn
  • spam
  • copyright violations (upon notice)

Aside from those, say whatever the fuck you want. There are no word filters. :-)

To avoid ad hominem comment jail is easy: attack the point being made, not the person making it. Or simply create a thread including "thunderdome" in the title and make your directly insulting comment there. It will be exempt from ad hominem comment deletions.

Users normally register with an email address, and then log in before posting, but logging in is not strictly required to post. You can submit a post with a fake email address and your post will go into moderation where it might get published, or might not.

If you "Befriend" another user, then that user can click your username to email you. Patrick.net never exposes or shares your email address except to other patrick.net users whom you have explicitly befriended. No email addresses are ever given to anyone else, and of course there is absolutely zero spam from Patrick.net itself.

If you "Ignore" another user, then for 30 days, you will not see their posts and comments, and they will not see yours. They also will not be able to comment on posts you start for 30 days.

To get another user's attention, mention him in a comment with an @ character prepended to his username ( for example @Patrick ) and then he will get an email of that comment.

If you include a #hashtag in your post, then it will be made clickable. Clicking it will list all posts with that hashtag.

If you are honored by someone with an incoming link from another website to a post you wrote, that post will get a gold star . It's also encouraged to personally place links to your own posts on other sites. If you're proud of your writing, why not share it with the largest possible audience?

If you include an image URL ending in .jpg, .png, or .gif it will be converted into the visible image in a post or comment.
If you include a YouTube or Vimeo URL, the post or comment will display the video.

If you include a plain URL to another site in a post or comment, and no other words, then patrick.net will attempt to automatically also include a short excerpt of text from that URL.

Most basic html tags work. You can also surround a word or phrase with the * character to make it bold or the _ character to make it italic.

If you're registered, then you can edit or delete any post or comment you entered, but there is no "blow away all of my comments at once" function.

Please write p@patrick.net with questions or suggestions.

patrick.net has never received a national security letter.

Google should have a public way of hurting the page rank of spammers. If someone spams a forum, send the link to Google to reduce the advertised website's page rank. Granted, we'd have to deal with saboteurs, but the benefits would outweigh this cost.

@Patrick

Did you make some programming changes? It looks like the "quote" function isn't posting the name of the poster quoted, it just comes up as "says".

Also, some threads that have long titles are coming back as "thread not found". Did you change settings on thread titles?

Ah fuck. Yes, I did make some changes this morning.

@Patrick

I'm still seeing it in threads, even in this reply. In the HTML it would say "posters name says" as part of the Hypertext at the top of the quoted text. Now it just has "says" as the hyperlink, but not the name of the quoted poster.

OK, I think it's fixed now. Quotes should always have "(user) says" in them. Thanks for telling me about that.

The "quote" button/hyperlink is missing from the OP in every thread. There's no way to highlight and quote anything in the original post.

Another bug.

If you search a existing User for their comments, if their screen name has two words, it come back as "no such user" because the system is inserting a "20" in the space between the first name and last name of the user.

Example: HEY YOU comes back as HEY20YOU if you click on his user name.

If you want to write a post totally anonymously, just enter it while logged out, and when it asks for an email address put in some crap email like this@that.com. The post will go into moderation and I'll get notified that it needs approval. There's a delay for approval, but then your post is anonymous.

Patrick, just curious...

What server are you using for this site?

Your own private server, third party domestic server, third party international server, Hillary's private server?

It's a single virtual server on Digital Ocean. So essentially my own private server. I'm happy with them, much more pleasant to use than AWS:

Or just use an alt like every other troll. Do people really need more anonymity than an account not at all associated with your real identity anyway?

Why? It's pure spam to use a site only to post a link to promote a different site. Did he contribute any content, or does he only want to take without giving?

Logan, on the other hand, also uses the site to promote himself, but that's fine with me, because he actually takes some time and contributes thoughtful comments.

By default they are in chronological order of activity (creation or new comment), and you eventually have to go to the second page to see a post if no one has commented on it lately.

But there are tabs for sorting other ways: number of comments in last week, number of likes, newest post creation time.

Has there been any discussion recently of of username histories? I do find it laborious and confusing with all the people that change their names. Another problem with changing usernames is that old posts are harder to understand since the user is now known by a different name.

Hmm, I wonder if I edit and put @patrick in after the fact, will he still get an email?

72   Patrick (371/371 = 100% civil)   Jan 16, 11:07am  ↑ like (2)   ↓ dislike   quote   top   bottom   home   share

Hi @justme yes, I got an email when you edited and put that in.

Should there be some limit on the ability to change usernames? It does get confusing when they get quoted under one name, but have since changed it so that the old quote and new comments appear under different names.

I think one username ever per email address is a good idea. By the way, are you as admin able to retrace the changes of usernames? I history of usernames on the user "homepage" is work but would be very informative.

75   Patrick (371/371 = 100% civil)   Jan 16, 12:07pm  ↑ like   ↓ dislike   quote   top   bottom   home   share

I cannot easily trace changes of username, because the previous name is overwritten in the database when a user changes it.

It would be possible to trace some name changes by looking at quotes of user comments, but it would be a lot of work, and still not reliable because the quotes could be edited at any time. I suppose I have backups and could look at the state of the database over time, but that would also be hard.

It would be easier to create a new table of names which shows changes over time from now on. Is it worth the work?

What does gmail do? Can you change your gmail address and retain the same account?
