Hildale, Utah and Colorado City, AZ are two small towns that straddle the state lines. The approximately 3,000 people who live there are members of the Fundamentalist LDS Church, most recently headed by Warren Jeffs. They believe in polygamy and dress like they are from the past, wear no makeup, and obviously have a lifestyle that is different from most of the rest of the US. They don't have the internet, don't have television and don't listen to the radio. There have been several tv shows focused on people trying to leave the polygamous cults, altho some of them are foused on the clans in the SLC area. You might compare them to the Amish or Mennonites, although their leader was in the news for being a wacked out dude who is now in prison for life. He still runs the church from prison.

The show "Sister Wives" has absolutely nothing in common with the polygamists sects in Colorado City/Hildale.

Yesterday there were horrendous rains and several of the townspeople went to the crick to watch the floods from a safe distance - but the water was higher and too swift for them to get away. Women and small children (the youngest 4 years old) were killed, they are still looking for one more missing and this doesn't even count the hikers in Zion who were also swept away.

People don't understand the way that flash floods work in these parts. The rain pours down into these dry creek beds and narrow canyons - the water shoots out of the canyons with unbelievable force and destroys everything in its way. In 2005, a tiny creek in St George flooded and took out numerous homes and destroyed many more.

This is what our floods look like:

That is a trip.

Sorry to hear about the children getting killed that is a shame.

That's pretty awful. They have fatal flash floods in California, too. I guess you have to know the terrain hot spots, but the storms that cause them can be so far away, you can't even see them on what might otherwise appear to be a peaceful, clear day.

They say the water rose dramatically in about 30 seconds and swept away the people on the banks. A couple of other drivers in cars said they threw their cars in reverse and went about 200-300 yards in reverse with it floored and barely got away. They are still looking for one missing child, and several hikers in Zion.

The hikers were told that there was a danger but they chose to go anyway. I sincerely doubt that they were told specifically about it - the ranger interviewed said that they were told it would probably rain but I'm not sure if people from outside our neck of the woods would know how bad it can get.

reminds of the story about tourists taking selfies with bears. some people are just persistant in their drive towards a Darwin award.
