#random With recreational marijuana becoming available for sale on New Year’s Day, you may be asking yourself: Do I want to try this stuff?

If you have never used cannabis, or if it has been a long time since you have, you need to know that pot isn’t just consumed through joints and bongs anymore. Consumers also use vape pens, edibles and other products.

And marijuana has higher amounts of THC – pot’s psychoactive ingredient – than it once did. In the early 1990s, the average amount of THC in confiscated marijuana samples was roughly 3.7 percent, according to the National Institute of Drug Abuse. Now, many retail strains test in the high 20s and some even top 30 percent.

In addition, edibles have come a long way since the days when homemade pot brownies were the only choice, and they can be potent as well – who can forget New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd’s infamous opinion piece about consuming too much of a weed candy bar during a trip to Colorado?

Rare And Mysterious Vomiting Illness Linked To Heavy Marijuana Use.

There's no hard data on the prevalence of the illness. But in California and Colorado, which have loosened marijuana laws in recent years, some emergency physicians say they're seeing it more often. One study in Colorado suggests there may be a link.

Dr. Aimee Moulin, an emergency room physician at UC-Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, says she has seen a rise in the number of cases since California voters legalized recreational marijuana last November. She expects to see another increase after commercial sales are permitted starting in January.

Doctors say it's difficult to treat the condition. There is no cure other than to quit using marijuana, and many patients are skeptical that cannabis is making them sick, so they keep using it and their vomiting episodes continue.

Doctors can do little to relieve the symptoms, since traditional anti-nausea medications often don't work and there are no pills to prevent the onset of an episode. Patients may need intravenous hydration and hospital stays until the symptoms subside.

Of course it could just be the same effect which leads smarter people to drink more. Chronic drinking is proportional to IQ. Drinking doesn't make you smarter. Smarter people tend to enjoy drinking.

This sounds like some serious propaganda

Much like the “pot is so much stronger now than it used to be”. Apocalypse reference a hemp farmer smoking leaf. Moneysheep reference the potency of bud that was being confiscated in arrests. Both bad comparisons. How much different do you think the Jamaican strands grown on the island are now vs back when Rastas were growing the stuff Bob Marley smoked?

Here’s what has changed in the United States: for years you had three main sources of production for grass consumed in this country.
Mexican
Cali
Canadian

A lot of the confiscated grass was the shit from Mexico, which was of low quality with seeds and had zero quality control. Was pressed into bricks with little effort put in the curing process, which is where all the work goes into making sure that sticky icky stuff is so good. Then left to cook in the desert sun in the back of a semi.

California supplied much of the domestic indoor crop, snd the northern mountains have ideal weather (cool trmps, low humidity) for growing grass. Mix in lack of enforcement and they grew a lot of good bud that wasn’t being confiscated like the mexican mud bud which is being tested for potency.

Then Canadian indoors which also brought the popular B(ritish) C(colombian) buds. The currency conversion made it even sweeter deal for Americans back when 1 USD bought you 1.5 CAD it was inflation on the value of your bag of smoke. But they’ve never bothered much with our northern border and that supply chain existed uninterrupted. It just became less desirable as the currency reached parity, and the BC markets saturated while they sacrificed quality for price. All the while California ramped up production with high quality outdoors at a better price.

Wholesale prices have cratered while supply has increased exponentially. The data is shoddy but we can assume that prices went from ~$10 per gram in the late 90’s to 7$ per gram by 2010, down to almost $3 per gram now. That’s a phenomenal decrease in price. All the while growers have scaled their way down to $1-$2 per gram price of production.

It will be interesting to see what happens with California recreational coming on line to start the new year. What Will Trump Do about his federal government and Attorney General heading a Failed Loser war against the Liberals movement to Liberate Hemp and Cannabis from the throngs of Christian Republican SJW Moral Prohibition? There’s big money involved now, with no pathway for large institutions to legally monetize their IRS remittances via our financial institutions. I guess we just sit back and watch Canada dominate the global market, and create all those good paying jobs that boom their economy and restore freedom to their citizenry like the Bigtime Liberals they are. Better hope the Christian Republicans don’t railroad this economic boom.

Blockchain obviously is poised to intersect the blooming flower markets need for financial relevancy and i can see them boosting one another.

There’s many investable angles to this green rush, and while many of the large gains have been taken, there’s obviously going to be plenty of inflows snd opportunities moving forward. The safest play in the space is probably Scotts SMG, whose five year chart resembles Facebook and pays a dividend

I find edibles to be a great aid in sleeping well. Unlike alcohol, there is no rebound effect to wake you up at 3am. And unlike with melatonin, my dreams after eating an edible are usually very good and I wake up easily in the morning. Melatonin often gives me nightmares, and then makes it very hard to wake up and get out of bed.

Maybe edibles leave some mild impairment of short-term memory in the morning, but it's not a very strong effect.

Smoking anything is bad for you. Edibles are a sensible way to go. A good friend of mine is a total stoner. Started several companies. Multimillionaire. Said he has one rule - if he uses weed, he must exercise. Rarely drinks alcohol. Eats a lot of veggies, but is no vegan. Says the herb helps him with creativity which aids in his entrepreneurial business endeavors. I asked him why he started to use MJ and he said when he was in high school, there were the jocks, the nerds and the stoners, many of whom were quite bright He said he identified with the stoners, many of whom went on to become doctor, lawyers, and IT folks. Go figure.

Or smarter people tend to run their brain faster and longer, thus making it harder to ramp down after a long day. Alcohol 'assists' the rampdown...

Yes, I know it seems unlikely, but there seems to be quite a lot of evidence for it, whatever the cause:

#FakeNews

No it's true.
Gotta smoke a LOT to get there though. Too much pot over time CAN also cause psychosis.

Certain people will always abuse substances.

Forgive me for not believing you without proof. Got any?

There was a study done in Reagans days in office that showed MJ caused brain damage. Turns out it was the lack of oxygen that caused brain damage which we already knew.

They've tried for decades to link cannabis with negative health side affects. It's always been proven to be bogus. Remember Reefer Madness? I won't totally discount the possibility that people who over-use/abuse a substance, won't get sick from it, the same way too much water is bad for you. But I doubt they've taken into consideration factors like:

1. Too much cannabis makes you dizzy, which can certainly lead to vomiting
2. Most products are NOT organic, and most people do NOT use hemp wick for smoking.

So could it be more likely that these people have some sort of butane sickness, YES, definitely. There are also chemicals that have been used to add weight that are toxic. A couple people died from this in the Netherlands. That product was outlawed, but variations of it are still used today.

Thank you. I believe this has been gone over here at pat net. The thing is people are psychotic just in general. It's not the MJ that makes them psychotic it only makes it come out faster.

This article is not using the data on marijuana ER visits properly, and using it to exaggerate the connection of cannabis to psychosis (this is their reference #2: https://www.samhsa.gov/data/sites/default/files/DAWN127/DAWN127/sr127-DA...).

1. The article in the Psychiatric Times is about cannabis-induced psychosis, total ER visits is not data about psychosis which is the topic of the article. For example, this study in the NEJM (http://www.nejm.org/doi/suppl/10.1056/NEJMc1515009/suppl_file/nejmc15150...), using of data from more than 100 hospitals reported to the Colorado Hospital Association from 2011 through 2014, showed that only 6% of 2,603 ER visits for marijuana included some psychotic symptoms (the 6% included patients with “agitation” only as well, so not all of the 6%, but further detailed data is not provided), and 43% were for GI or cardiopulmonary reasons.

2. “Marijuana-related” ER visits does not mean other substances were not taken, many ER visits are not related to one substance (see the full DAWN report).

3. Persons getting “marijuana” on the street does not mean the substance in question for the ER visits was not “spiked” with other substances.

4. There is no data on the purity, dose, or strength of the substance taken.

5. The U.S. population also increased by 12 million persons from 2006 to 2011 (https://tradingeconomics.com/united-states/population), naturally the absolute number of substance related ER visits will increase over this time-the data needs to be per 100,000 of population.

The ER visit data is not about psychosis and is not a clinical trial. We’d need to see the incidence of psychotic symptoms vs dose in a controlled trial of a substance of confirmed purity. Psychotic symptoms would need to be operationally defined in terms of severity and duration for the data to have meaning. For example, 5-minutes of feeling paranoid would not be a good indicator of psychotic risk.

Mental disorders due to legally sold marijuana is a concern for society, unfortunately this article does not have strong controlled data and the senior Dr. George being a NIDA sponsored researcher suggests the article is part of a NIDA sponsored curb on marijuana use campaign.

What do we call the people who are just now trying Cannabis for the first time?

Certainly not Americans, because allowing the Government to decide which medicinal flowers you utilize goes against the very spirit of being American.

Seriously, what kind of Failed Loser is open to the possibility that they might want to try to utilize Cannabis, but they’re awaiting permission from their mommee the USFEDGOV?

Oh but it’s illegal! Can’t do that!

Oh but now it’s legal! Let’s give it a try. And a bad rap to boot because I’m a Failed Loser POS anti-American halfwit who doesn’t know how to live my life without the big government controlling me!!

Lol, so true!

Rule for newbies: start with 5mg or less, and wait at least two hours before eating any more.
