My take on this. The car is old and out of warranty, so this job is customer-pay. They also modded things, so Tesla made no promises regarding the outcome of a $22,000 stock battery replacement alone. Car owners took a different route than repairing and keeping the car. They teamed up with a few other big name youtubers (I've seen these various channels a few times, they're not bad), salvaged the valuable resellable and hazardous waste parts from the body, took it to a remote quarry, and blew it up for a publicity stunt worth more than the cash value of the car, probably repaired or not.
