Ultimately, the only real monopoly is the monopoly on gratuitous murder, enslavement and interpersonal violence. The ultimate claim of government is that they protect us so we can go about our business without worrying that a flaming arrow is going to hit us in the back. Also, the government is supposed to exert violence in controlled ways that contribute the orderliness and fairness of society (in theory).
Tribes have been invading each other for resources and reproductive rights (rape) since the apes became social and banded together. Things are not going to be peaceful and self organizing just because you want them to. I think hard core anarchists like Corbett are kind of gobsmacked idealists, though I love his research and his shows. The competition, conquest, and resource allocation arguments are the ones that keep governments going. Governments also standardize issues of exchange.
However, point taken. Our present government has been trying as hard as it can to completely abrogate the social contract to protect us, while also continuing to rob us. They are also methodically dismantling the social contracts of our promised and traditional rights. Thus they are zero for three in the major things a government is allegedly supposed to be doing for us.

I don't think people truly realize how dumb politicians are. A law degree does not make you smart, which many of our federal politicians have. My sister has one, is someone prominent where she lives. She's not "smart" if that makes sense.
Your local school board and municipal board, likely all morons. Our acting village president is high at meetings, likely drank some Sierra Nevadas, and also is a full time professor at a CC. I'm friends with her. She reads books and student papers. She has zero idea how to handle a water main break. The cost. Sewage treatment plant. Maintaining village property. Roads. List can go on and on for someone that is totally unqualified.
These boards and city councils just buy what they're being sold or bribed for. It's what my wife does in sales. Not the bribe part, but she does pay for a lot of shit for customers that are government employees, generally unelected employees. Dinners, golf, boat trips, etc.

On the one hand, they say that the free market must be regulated in order to prevent monopolies. It is assumed that these monopolies would have such great power over the market that their customers would be forced to settle for products far more expensive than, and inferior to, those that would be offered under competitive market conditions. On the other hand, these intellectuals, journalists, and voters explicitly advocate that one group (government) monopolize the money supply, policing, courts, taxation, legislation, compulsory education, and a myriad of other things that we may consider to be vitally important.
