Does anyone have experience in this area? What does it take? $$? Where do you start?

My board is not the school board, but it's relatively easy. Just have to take the effort depending on your district. You basically start out needing signatures based off a % of the population. Turn that in to the County clerk or whichever elected position you're going for. From there if it's a contested race it's all asking your network for $$ and getting signs in the ground on the local level. Maybe throw a party.

My Dad ran for a circuit court judge position here in IL. He lost. Was an interesting experience as a 13 year old kid at the time. Had an election night party at the house. It was fucking weird.

My board position in our small town requires 9 signature.... lol. So my process is super easy and it's uncontested. As vulgar as I am here I'm a nice guy and want to help our community get better.

Once you start getting over 20k in population, expect competition and having to door knock for signatures to get on the ballot. It's a legit part time job and I'm not sure any school board members are paid besides major metro areas.

So to run for school board, would it make sense to first go to the county clerk to find out the number of signatures needed?

Yes. You need the paperwork. I just assumed that it was assumed. Sorry, I've done my board 3 election cycles, so I gloss over the details.

Like I said, if you're in a bigger suburb or city have fun. It's fucking work bigly. Small towns like mine with 2,200 you're looking at 9-50 signatures max. Depends on the board. I could get 50 by tomorrow night. A city like Aurora or Naperville you'll need at least 1k. I hate politicians, but besides the national level, they do bust their ass to get in office. It's a weird game. It's an industry.
