Really, a BALLOON for spying doesn't make much sense, you can't really control its flight or direction. They've had solar powered airplanes for a while that can stay in the air indefinitely flying above the clouds. I don't know if you've seen a solar panel recently, they are basically about as thick as a few sheets of paper, meaning they are light.

I think something like that would be almost undetectable. I don't think it would even have much of heat signature, and it would be so tiny it would be hard to spot with anything. I suppose you could make it a partial dirigible as well.

Balloons are being considered for Martian and Venusian exploration. I read a shitload of articles in the past 3-4 years about the utility of High Altitude balloons for ELINT, battlefield surveillance, and even EMPs.

There's no reason China wouldn't say it's for science if it was.

The question is: What GOOD is the CCP doing by launching these balloons amid mystery and mystique?

The only viable answer is political and military.

I said that I suspect that Biden will shoot it down, once it has completed it's land mission and China has gathered all of the data that it needs, I quiped they would shoot it down once it hit the Atlantic Ocean.
