This is likely so trivial that readers will be annoyed.
Anyway, I have a used iPhone 8 plus from Mexico with a Telcel sim card.
I got back to Florida and was exhausted and went to bed.
Today I noticed that the wifi icon was showing.
I then checked in settings and it was connected to the router and the internet.
But, the router has a password, and I am certain that I never entered the password for this iPhone.
How did this happen?
Do iPhones possess special powers?

The wifi being active does not mean it's connected. Did you see it connected to an actual network, or just on? If connected, did you ever connect to this network with this phone in the past? Wifi connections are saved and remembered unless you remove them manually.

I don't really track it, but if you have a Macbook sometimes the Macbook gives the wifi password to the iPhone. You can sync Messages on your iPhone and Macbook.

I believe the answer is yes (meaning I don’t believe that most WiFi sources are secure and that devices such as iPhones are enabled to connect to WiFi without the users permission or prompts. Makes me wonder if every “smart tv” (even though it is not connected to WiFi deliberately by he owner, might actually be covertly connected to the internet and reporting and maybe even keeping records of what is watched, said and done in the vicinity of the TV just like Orwell indicated. And of course we Know for Certain that phones are doing that plus giving location data.

This phone has never been in Florida before last night.
I tested the wifi by putting it on airplane mode and using the wifi, and the internet works.
There is a MacBook nearby but it's not on nor asleep.
Strange.
