The secret sauce of the US tax system is they hit you a little bit everywhere at both the federal, state and local level. A national value added tax is on its way in 5-10 years to balance our deficit.

National tax would suck. It gets to a point where cheating the system is too beneficial. With california, we would be close to 15-20%, which starts to lead to a more cash based industry. I don't mind charging taxes before things hit the stores, because it hides it in the price.

I'm for killing the "tax free interenet shopping" first. Even though I use that a lot :) It would be a huge boon to CA actually, because a lot of my shopping goes outside CA, even though it's a few dollars cheaper in CA, after taxes, many of the products I buy go way up. This wouldn't only bring in tax dollars that go uncollected right now, but would bring business back into california.

Maybe in the future, the government will be 1 giant employment agency. Any job an employer posts, would have to go through them, and any candidate that applies, will have to go through them. That way, a company can pay $100k/year for an accountant to the government, and the government turns around and pays their guy $40k/year.

There's really no such things as tax free internet shopping. A sales tax is a repsonsibility of the seller and a use tax is the responsbility of the user. Well, in California, we have one amazon and 3 Million California customer's. California can get a 99% compliance rate just by auditing Amazon if they just collect the tax on the state's behalf

The commerce clause that governs business activity was written in a time when physical presence was the standard to determine out-of-state market exploitation. In the digital age, Amazon exploits the California market just as easily as Walmart can. Therefore, from a technical level, I really feel that Amazon should be collecting tax. tax lawyers are all over this issue on both sides.

Say whatever you want about Walmart, but they employ a huge amount of people, contribute a huge amount to the community and pay huge amounts of Payoll, Income, Property tax. Amazon is contributing millions of silly smiley face boxes to California.

Some smaller online retailers would be in trouble, because trying to sort out those taxes would be a nightmare for them. Unless the state could do it for them somehow. They fill in their normal forms, put in how many CA sales they had and how much it was for.

If they had to submit paperwork to 40 states every quarter, that would be a nightmare. But huge companies like Amazon are definitely hurting California. You're right, 8-10% differences are impossible to close. It would be interesting to see how purchasing would change for people.

Every good deed has waste unfortunately. Giving money to charities has high over head often! Government will abuse it to some degree. End users will abuse it. But it's really about how much good is done vs other methods. Waste will always be there.
