I would bet you anything if we had a team made up of all American players, then there would be considerable more interest in the World Cup.
What's that supposed to mean? They're all American citizens, are they not?
And finally, *learning English* means that these aren't British immigrants, who BTW, are both soccer fans and speak the Queen's tongue.
Don't come to England and call it soccer.
It means what it means, the only people who talk about Soccer are expats and illegals. Even the multi generational Latin people I know aren't into soccer at all. Not in the least bit. My wife is not a sports fan, but her heritage to watch the world cup because it's on. Is greater than her complacency about who actually wins. She hopes Peru will win but knows unequivocally that they wont. She has it on, because it's her cultural traddtion it's ingrained. And I think that's that AWESOME!
Now return the same consideration for those of us American's that aren't the least bit impressed. We're not in short company. You are, no matter how you wanna spin it.
Like shb, he doesn't even have a thought on Soccer and can really care a less about it. Unless Me or Ann Coulter pipes in and tells the truth about the lack of American enthusiasm and fanbase of Soccer.
Even on the News all of the fans that they show on the news that are at the Sports bars for various games. Are all Latinos. Even when they did the American team segment. This wasn't Hooters in Crackerville, full of white folk. It was a bar packed full of people of Latin country decent, who like my wife. Are ingrained to seek out the game when they play.
While Willy Johnson and Jarred Vazquez(3rd generation Cuban American) is at home following the Heat saga.
I think Soccer Hooligans are disappointed that us Yanks don't have any skin in the game, so they can fong the living stuffing out of us, when we're talking game smack.
If you aren't interested in football, then you're hardly in a position to talk about other people's interest in it or lack thereof.
But I'm into the existential trivial politics and hullabaloo that surround all sports. I just don't have any interest in the actual games nor the outcomes.
So actually it puts me in a better position than you.
I'm into that sorta thing.
Then why are you discussing it in this thread? You seem more interested in the race aspect of it than anything else.
This is the hullabaloo part.
I promise to sit out the winners celebration thread.
Should one ever pop up on Patent, I doubt it, as this tread was about NOT supporting Ann Coulter more than it was about supporting FIFA.
In fact this is the hundred and FIRST post in this thread, and I'm the first one to even mention FIFA.
So perhaps it is YOU and everyone else that you should be asking this.
What's FIFA got to do with anything? FIFA are a corrupt joke. Who needs to bring them up?
The issue with this thread is that very few in America will argue the popularity of soccer in the US. It's very low, even in comparison to the lower rated college basketball squads.
With that said, this baiting those who like soccer, as a bunch of 2nd class citizens and their liberal supporters, is like telling me that I should go spit on my British and Brazilian friends, because they're nice to me and have invited me to watch soccer/futbol tournaments with them.
And this is where I tell ppl like Ann to f'ck off.
What's FIFA got to do with anything? FIFA are a corrupt joke.
So admit it then you really don't know Dickall about soccer, other than it makes for nice copy.
FIFA is the single most important website in the whole universe for all my Latin extended family that is passionate about Soccer. And BTW, they believe my assessment 100%.
FIFA might be what ever it is, but if you follow Soccer, FIFA matters.

Yes, I know but this forum is kinda USA, in nature, and so I'm keeping the vernacular.

Why you gotta bring them along for the ride, this is about cheeky Yank poseurs who are only muster up a little interest in Soccer once every 4 years for the amount of time it takes the US to get eliminated.
We're not Newcastle!

You have to fing laugh. FIFA is an organization solely geared to hosting the WC every four years and the international games that involves. It's a closed, corrupt group of old men living it large. It isn't a bloody website. You are totally and utterly clueless. FIFA is basically meaningless if you follow football except for the WC. And even then, they are an impediment to its proper functioning. And if your friends talk about FIFA as you say they do, then they are as clueless about football as you.

Of course we're not Newcastle!
And even in my region, the New England Revolution, the soccer club, is nowhere near the popularity of the Red Sox, Patriots, Celtics, or Bruins, not even close.
But still, some 13-15K ppl still attend those games so it's not like a zero attendance event.
I'm not trying to marginalize those who are American soccer fans.
I'm only injecting reason as to whey the fanbase isn't as big as the American big 3 sport leagues.

Your country developed a very particular college based system?
Your country developed a very particular college based system?
NCAA does have a collegiate soccer league but like the MLS, the attendance is low, in comparison to the other sports.
Football is a working class game that has no connection to higher education in the rest of the world and has only fairly recently been adopted by the chattering middle classes. Sports in the US appear (at least to an outsider) to revolve around the colleges. They certainly seem to be huge money making institutions that then directly feed into the professional leagues. It's a very different system to most (all?) other countries.

Apparently not.
Soccer is clearly not popular in America as it is in Europe and the rest of the world. It is, however, gaining in popularity, and one day will be just as popular.
For now, it is regarded as a sport for liberals, which is why it's knocked by the likes of Ann Coulter and Rush Limbaugh.
If you must knock it, don't knock it on the grounds of race, because that is pretty stupid. Knock it because it can be boring or low scoring, or you are just not into it.
But it's still a sport. Even my dog loves it. She cheats, and hogs the ball, but she loves it.
Futbol lacks the high drama of NASCAR, the suspense of anticipating the next left turn.

And I love that you love that your dog loves soccer balls.

Futbol would be good with designated snipers in the stands and armed players who could respond to sniper fire.
Would keep the fans alert.
Where would the snipers hide?
The skyboxes are too obvious.

Here in Houston we have the Dynamo. They had their own stadium built that hold 22,000. They pretty much play to sold out games and a few of the ones who buy tickets even have green cards.

My point was about the other sports rather than football. I presume a lot of their power and popularity comes from the way they've been adopted by colleges and seemingly transformed into a college funding business all their own (at least for two of them). Football (soccer) is an extremely popular sport in the US amongst the very young (as in actually playing it), but then the competitive side of it appears to fall away as those children get older.

Why should they hide?
Becasue that's what they do - by definition:
snip·er (snpr) n.
1. A skilled military shooter detailed to spot and pick off enemy soldiers from a concealed place.
2. One who shoots at other people from a concealed place.
I don't think soccer will ever beat NFL in terms of rating and popularity but it can definitely challenge baseball which is having a very tough time with the younger under 35 demographic (mainly issues of games taking too long and aftermath of steroid era). Whether it can beat NBA, I am not sure but wouldn't be surprised if it did. One thing that is going against soccer is that for regular season the MLS has subpar talent vs regular season league in most of europe and the fans will not embrace a sport that is de-facto minor league status in the home country while NBA, NFL and MLB has the best athletes in the world for regular season competition.
Plan to Replace American Football With Soccer “On Track,†Says Europe

The spokesman offered no timetable for eliminating baseball, but indicated that it was “in the works.â€"

My region is a baseball state so I think the Red Sox will always draw the most fans. And now that baseball has a lot of latin players, it's highly likely that it'll maintain its perch, despite the juicing scandals.
NFL is so national and multi-regional that it think its position is secure for a while.
The problem the NBA is facing is that they've been living in the post-Jordan era for more than 15 years and I think it's tough to maintain a type of perennial interest, based around the hype of a potential successor to His Airness, which still hasn't occurred yet despite all the malarkey of the Kobe/LeBron show. Thus, b-ball needs a bit of an overhaul, before Durant and future all stars, fail to live up to the great Michael's playoff stats sheets, and future generations get bored of the next showboat.
So if soccer is the alleged sport of the american liberals yet the sport is embraced by right wing european reactionary racists does it mean that american liberals are more conservative than european conservatives?

No, it simply means that you don't understand what "right wing" means, nor what the terms "liberal" or "conservative" mean outside of colloquial and short-term historical context.

The real problem with soccer is that there are not enough breaks for me to run to the fridge for another beer. 45 minutes between beers is WWWAAAYYYY too long. This is also why hockey is not popular...you have to stay glued to your seat.

There's a way to efficiently combine fridge beer run regardless of sport....
This is also why hockey is not popular...you have to stay glued to your seat.
Yeah, but hockey has two halftimes. :)

Haha, yep, it is the more patriotic of the sports without timeouts!

Excerpt: "If more "Americans" are watching soccer today, it's only because of the demographic switch effected by Teddy Kennedy's 1965 immigration law. I promise you: No American whose great-grandfather was born here is watching soccer. One can only hope that, in addition to learning English, these new Americans will drop their soccer fetish with time."
