I don't know. I am not one that avoids TV and video all together, and yet I've managed to miss the Kardasians and Jenners Drama almost entirely. I've heard that there's speculation about Jenner becoming a woman and now confirmation. But to suggest that it even had my attention for more than a few seconds is a stretch. As for the Kardasians, I've never seen them or their show, and only recently learned one of them is married to that pompous Kanye West.

Of course I TOTALLY do not get his music either. Maybe all of this is just a sign of me getting old.

I am old enough to remember Bruce Jenner in his athletic heyday, and have to acknowledge the total bizarrness of his wanting to become fully female in his mid sixties. But this right now is the most I've thought about the whole thing. I guess I'll watch a video of his interview now to see what the fuss is about.

Not all boomers are narcissistic and overly self involved, but after watching Dianne Sawyers interview with Jenner, that's basically my take away.

HE got a lot of attention for his athletic success, which also must have taken a lot of a certain kind of self involvement. And he was a very pretty man. A man can be pretty when he's 20, 25 or 30 . Young men often wear earings and adorn themselves with tattoos, clothing etc in an effort to make themselves more "cool," or attractive to women which with some men is a fine line from being pretty

I think most of his story is BS, and that he's just overly self involved and can't deal with the fact that middle aged men can't really compete with young men (at least with respect to being "cool" and physically attractive to young women). It's just his version of the self involved Californian who used to be one of the beautiful people, having a hard time dealing with aging.

I think you've hit the nail on the head Marcus. This is BJs attempt to deal with his fears about aging. He's unable to maintain the pretty-boy persona that kept him from having to face the realty of eventual death (I'm too handsome and important for that!) so he's undergoing a transformation in an attempt to recapture both beauty/youth and fame.
And people are calling him "brave."

I don't doubt that he's transgendered. He's always been effeminate (not that having effeminate traits is indicative of being transgendered). He said something about no longer acting like a male and being the female he truly feels he is. I feel bad for anyone who feels that they have to hide their true identity.

But a series about his transformation? A "news" show with Diane Sawyer that is obviously a lead-in to his show, so that he can make tons of money? There are many transgendered people who can't afford surgery, hormones, etc but simply because he's part of the famewhore clan he is broadcasting gold.

I've never watched an episode of the Kardashians - although they are the lead-in to "the soup" so I 've seen a minute of their show. My friend's daughter is obsessed with them, and I can't fathom why. Kanye is the same - the only thing I've ever seen of his is the scene from a video awards show when he publicly embarrassed taylor swift while she was receiving an award. He seems like an ass.

And I don't doubt he's a nutjob (or is that he's going to get a nut job?). The man (obviously) has mental problems but instead of getting him help, we celebrate it and promote it. Yup, one heck of a world this is turning into.

In the womb, all brains start out female and then around half develop into male. By delivery, the brain matches the anatomy in 99% of babies. Around 1% of the time, it doesn't. That discrepancy creates dysphoria, the only question being what to do about it. Since nobody has figured out how to make the brain match what's outside it, the remaining solution is to make the outside match the brain. For millennia, around the world, there have been anatomical males who lived as females, and anatomical females who lived as males. It probably happens in other species also, but they don't wear clothing or develop advanced surgery or TV shows, so it's less obvious.

I don't understand why celebrities draw higher ratings than PBS Nova, but they do, and if I were stuck in an airport with nothing on TV but Jenner's journey and Jimmy Swaggart, I'd sooner watch Jenner. At least "reality" TV provides some glimpses of reality (even if festooned with product placements), in contrast to outright charlatans.
