Basically, once we stop the lock-in, the pandemic will start again and in the best case will be at a level sufficient to overwhelm the healthcare system capacity by a factor 8.
Only hope a vaccine, which could be 18 months away.
Or a drug if we're lucky.

The drug thing is looking promising in the last few days.

Chloroquine seems to significantly help affected people.

I'm not 80 or older and totally not worried about it.

The thing is that other nations, even those who dislike us, get to see it as our weakness. Very little can be done to prevent a viral attack. Other nations have antibiotic resistant strains that would annihilate us all.

I'd think (hope) they are administering this to thousands of people now and we should know in less than a week if it is going to work or at least tamp down the death rate for the older/sicker folks.

If it works, we should be out of the lock-down before the end of the month and hopefully a vaccine in a year?

What's really lacking is scientifically proven statistics on how much it helps. The positive results so far are all individual doctors going "wow, that really helped." Which is good in itself.
11   Shaman   2020 Mar 19, 6:31pm

Yah the drugs Residivir and Chloroquone are having positive results, but it's not scientific enough yet to be "Official" so the quarantine will go on until a new plan is formed. Trump seemed to be hinting today that these drugs are a "game changer" and that it could spell a much different situation for people if all goes well. But he's wise enough not to overpromise at this point. We are likely in a lock down for a couple months.

We are the ones that knew America already was great. It's somewhat worse after 3 years of Trump, but he hasn't totally destroyed it yet. He just made the dark underbelly more pronounced.

You're not a billionaire either, but it doesn't stop you from basing your politics on whats best for the 1%.

Let that sink in.

So you bought that nonsense too ?

We've been building up our Mexican border security bigly since 2008. It's true the democrats didn't politicize their position on this, for obvious reasons. It's a political game, but the borders were being strengthened anyway.

What does having people that will cut grass, pick crops, or be a nanny competently, or do construction work in non union states have to do with the .1 % ? We've always had immigrants (or exslaves) doing that kind of work. It's good for the economy. America never didn't have those kind of workers.

That's BS. NOBODY asks a landscaper team whether all of their workers are legal. Same for maid services or people that pick crops or do other such low pay work. You talk as if there are two tiers, legal and illegal. There aren't. I'm not saying that you can't find a maid thats's legal. But if she's good the pay is more or less the same either way. Same for landscaping. But that's going to be a owner manager that's legal, and his workers are his business.

That is a red herring and you know it. Virtually all Dems running for office today are for free medical for illegals, sanctuary cities, driver's licences for illegals, tearing down the wall, and hampering or even disbanding ICE. First thing the Dems did in VA when they added both Houses to the Gov slot was to push driver's licenses for illegals and sanctuary cities. Even laws against the number of non-related individuals sharing a household have been thrown out, in order to allow a 20 person illegals colony in a single family home.

I'm simply hoping some of these bastards in CA will start covering their god damn pie-holes when they cough or nares when they sneeze. Or their whole god damn face when they do whatever the fuck they are doing. Three weeks ago when I made my costco run to beat the crowds some fat lady fucking sneezed twice all over the fucking cheese section. It's like she aimed or something. I just moved on. Normally I say something but I was in a hurry.

I see that shit all- the- time!

Tired of it. Want to move. Plant yams or something. Even in normal times.

Seriously. I grew up with redneck bull riders with better hygiene and cleaner homes than people living in coastal CA.
23   Reality   2020 Mar 20, 10:21pm

The UV light from the Sun during spring and summer will end this "pandemic": the longer daylight and improving incident angle at northern latitude (so sun light has to pass through less miles of atmosphere and ozone layer before reaching earth's surface, and spread over less area per unit of solar radiation) allow more UV light to penetrate the protein shell of virus, killing the virus and turning the dead virus in to a natural vaccine. That's how "herd immunity" is built up among the population against every type of flu and cold virus every spring and summer . . . the mass killing of virus every year also force the virus to mutate, hence those flu and cold virus types evolved to be RNA virus instead of the far more stable DNA virus.

The average stay at a nursing home is only 8 months (before dying). So every two months, the case-fatality-rate is about 25% at almost all time before Covid-19! The dying human body at advanced age of course is likely to be tested positive for all types of common virus / bacteria that happen to be spreading when the person died.

Yes, sometimes but very rarely, flu and cold also get a few young people, especially when they pick up some secondary infection in the hospital or when the doctors prescribed the wrong medicine/procedure. 100,000 Americans die every year from infections that they pick up from hospitals. The 1918-1919 "Spanish Flu" disproportionately killing the young and healthy was because doctors over-prescribed Asprin, then considered a magical drug that had just been won from German Bayer as WWI war loot (no longer had to pay patent fees). Corona virus is not a type of Flu but a type of Bad Cold: the medical term Flu was invented about 100 years ago to signify a type of Bad Cold that was a lot worse than the usual "Common Cold"; about 20-30% of "Common Cold" is caused by corona virus every year, and CDC says about 1 Billion common cold cases take place in the US each year, so there are 200million to 300million corona virus cases in the US each year!

There is very little hospitals can do for the severe cases (that can not be done at home): ventilator/intubation are about the only thing uniquely available at hospitals (besides all sorts of secondary infection agents that are not desirable), and people who got put on the ventilator/intubation had a 90-95+% chance of dying anyway! So the whole flattening the curve thing is a 90-95+% waste of time!

Those kids on the beaches in Florida and Texas were actually doing a very positive thing for stopping the pandemic: for that particular low-risk demographic to expose each other under the Sun (and UV) is a great way of getting as many people exposed to the virus (many of which dying/dead under the Sun/UV) so as to develop herd immunity quickly! That's how they can be safe to their grandparents when they get back to their home states. Given the original R0==3, The contagion is not going to stop until 66-70% of the population has been exposed to the virus and has developed immunity. That's how flu and cold season ends every year. You can always count on the government officials to do the exact wrong thing!

What the treasonous leftists originally thought would tank Trump's popularity (by tanking the economy) is enabling Trump to implement policies that are making him even more popular: sending out checks while implementing a relatively sensible voluntary social-distancing policy without forcing draconian measures on domestic American citizens . . . and get this: finally having an excuse to close the Mexican border entirely and turning back illegals on-sight! As usual, the incompetent leftists just shot themselves in the foot!

I don't even know what to say.

Once upon a time states and localities were super aggressive and if somebody called and made a complaint, the county would zoom out there in no time. I remember stories on TV of home improvement guys getting busted for hiring illegals, usually Dominicans.

Now States and Localities - especially in Blue and Well off areas - studiously ignore it.

Within my lifetime, almost everything was done by legal Americans. There might have been an occasional Irishman on a tourist visa laying brick, but that was about it. California may have been different, but when I worked with cement pillars in a Long Island pit in the mid 90s in the summer, I worked with two dozen guys and every last one was legal, even though the boss man was a stingy Greek who would have jumped at the chance to hire illegal Mexicans.

I worked in an Italian restaurant in High School, like many other kids, everybody was legal, including me, the prep guy and dishwasher. I remember chopping so much garlic and getting garlic under my fingernails and pieces of brillo pad, too. All the girls I knew babysat. There were a few upper class people with nannies or au pairs, but most of them were also legal (and almost entirely White or Puerto Rican).

My friend dropped out of school to do janitorial and landscaping work and he used to beg me to come out to Long Island from New Jersey and help him on the weekend for $150 a day. He probably employs Mexicans now, but he didn't back then. All American born kids from the USA.

I also worked stocking trucks in New Jersey and everybody was 100% legal. In fact the labor agency demanded proof of citizenship or green card and checked it rigorously. This was for Kenmore/Sears.

The country hummed along just fine.

The idea that America has been infested with illegal labor forever and the laws were never enforced and it's the complaining about it that is new, is utter complete bullshit.

Dems CAMPAIGNED on getting rid of illegals as late as the early 2000s.

@marcus, I did not dislike tho post but I disagree with what you say.
Cheap slave labor allows the top 0.001% to avoid paying Americans decent salary, ignore safety rules, avoid paying taxes etc, which leads to oversized profits. So, illegal immigration helps rich ones much more than the average American, who would see tomato prices raise by 5%, and would have to mow his grass himself, which would benefit him as either he or his fat ass kids would lose weight.
Note that I did not accuse OBAMA! of being soft on illegals as Bush was the same, and likely nearly every president before them for 30-40 years.
If Big Business does not benefit from illegals, then how come Koch brothers are all for it?

33   komputodo   2020 Mar 21, 9:03am

marcus's liberalism reminds me of something that may or not make sense...I'll just put it out there......let's say he is standing in a long line and someone (lets say an illegal alien, a jig or a trans homo just because he'll score SJW points) asks him for permission to cut in line which he would allow due to his grandiose manner.
He doesn't realize or intentionally ignores that he has no right to give "cuts" unless he himself relinquishes his spot and he goes to the back of the line....Otherwise he's allowing the person to cut in line in front of everyone that is in line behind him...yet he feels that he has the right to do that just because in his mind, it's the right thing to do....He doesn't ask everyone else behind him if it's OK...He just wants to decide for eveyone and if you don't agree, he'll trash talk you... He has his own set of rules.
