WASHINGTON – Multiple states have seen protests as stay-a-home orders meant to curb the spread of the coronavirus continue.

Many protesters were angry about the economic ramifications the restrictions are causing. Economists surveyed by Bloomberg estimate the Labor Department will report Thursday that 5.5 million Americans filed initial applications for unemployment insurance last week. ...

Demonstrators drove thousands of vehicles – many draped with protest signs – to Michigan's state Capitol on Wednesday, loudly protesting Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer's stay-at-home order.

The demonstration was dubbed "Operation Gridlock" because organizers said they wanted to gain attention by tying up traffic. With the thousands of vehicles, traffic was backed up for more than a mile around the Capitol in several directions, according to Lt. Darren Green of the Michigan State Police.

They know more than I do. 5.5M would be a good number at this point though. I think it's more. I know some business owners flush with cash that are just laying everyone off at this point with promises to bring them back.

I think next week is the shocker. I think we start seeing some government employees laid off. Might be the following week. If we don't hit 30M by the last week of April I'd be shocked.

Members of the crowd - many not wearing protective medical masks and some armed with assault rifles - shouted 'Recall Whitmer', waved Trump flags, showed off Trump-Pence 2020 posters and held banners saying 'Heil Whitmer' and 'live free or die'.

Four sheriffs in Michigan announced Wednesday that they will not enforce parts of the restrictive COVID-19 stay-at-home order recently issued by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D), after the officers concluded that Whitmer may be pushing the bounds of her position.

"We write today to inform the public for our respective counties of our opposition to some of Governor Whitmer's executive orders," the four sheriffs wrote in a letter posted to Twitter. "While we understand her desire to protect the public, we question some restrictions that she has imposed as overstepping her executive authority."

The letter is signed by Leelanau County Sheriff Mike Borkovich, Benzie County Sheriff Ted Schendel, Mainstee County Sheriff Ken Falk, and Mason County Sheriff Kim Cole. "We will deal with every case as an individual situation and apply common sense in assessing the apparent violation," they said, emphasizing the importance of proper social distancing but questioning the repressive nature of the directive.

Whitmer's order generated a great deal of pushback. It includes a prohibition on large retailers selling allegedly nonessential items, such as paint and outdoor supplies, meaning stores like Home Depot had to tape off those sections from customers. Lawncare services have been temporarily shuttered. With very few exceptions, the order prohibits people from traveling between residences, even to their cottages in the northern part of the state, where there are few COVID-19 cases. Residents of other states, however, may still travel to such properties in Michigan if permitted by their respective home states. Individuals may not use motorboats, but they are authorized to use boats without motors.

This is good. The police are rightly objecting to arbitrary irrational use of power here.

We're seeing the cracks. We'll see. I really don't want social disorder as someone that's been prepared for something like this. I don't like "executive orders" but at some point who is in charge of this whole thing? If there's no risk of arrest, that turns into some scary times.

I feel like we just need to open back up and let the chips fall where they may. If we lose a million or two, so be it. Still have not seen in the over hyped media even one hospital overwhelmed in the US. More just drama clips. AHHHHHH that guy just died. Riiiiiiiiiiiiight........

I don't know what she was thinking. People in Michigan are very independent.
