I bought a 7 inch adjustable hole saw yesterday to cut round holes to patch my holes in my plaster I made to help fish new wires and rip out the old cloth romex from my walls near the boxes, and at the ceiling near the wall. The thing has a very short chuck bit, and there was no way to hold it from the bottom and tighten the chuck. So silly me without thinking better of it, grabbed it from the top to hold it while I pulled the trigger to tighten it.

So as soon as I pulled the trigger I knew I done screwed up, these Makita drill drivers are no joke and have a torque that you can't hold back, like the cheap Ryobi shit I was used to. In that quick brief instance, it flung blood on the dust catch and spread a few blood drops around my work area, my hand felt like it got a good thump. But I could tell by the blood splatter I was seeing, it got me good. The cut is about an inch long on my left hand pinky finger, on the first bone from the hand not the finger tip. The cut is on the outside, and the flap spreads about 1/4 inch or more when not pressed together. After calling around the Urgent care places and finding the cheapest that was open on Sunday.
I went to an urgent care a few minutes away. Charged $145 to see the Doctor, and was told it could be another $100 for the stiches.. I filled out the paper work and waited a few minutes and was called in. The prep nurse asked what happened, to which I just said a power tool mishap. By that time the receptionist came over and said, "Oh yeah, I didn't get to look at the cut can you show it." I took off my make shift bandage and the nurse and receptionist both winced, by that time the Woke female Doxter(These people aren't Doctors!) wanted to see it as well. I showed her and and the girls winced again and the Doxter lady winced and exclaimed.. "EWE!" "Uh yeah, I pretty much don't do stiches on fingers, there's just too many nerves."
I said well I should have been told that before I paid the $145, she said she would refund and did.
Now I could have informed her, that due to where the cut is, it missed any sensitive nerves and I can still feel pin pricks on every other part of my finger and hand, so I'm not concerned about nerve damage. But it dawned on me, that these weren't medical professionals at all. These are morons that embraced every bit of the Covid nonsense. All of the real Doctors lost their livelihood for refusing to go along with it. ,

So I decided I was a far better practicing Physician than any of those knuckleheads so my next stop was CVS to get some wound supplies.

Wound wash
Betadine
Rapid seal wound gel
Tubular gauze

I cleaned it well then applied the rapid seal wound gel, the tubular gauze which also came with a hard plastic finger protector.
I got to tell you that wound gel is amazing stuff, I wish I would have had better experience with it. The application I applied yesterday, held so well the tubular gauze was stuck to it, it didn't leak a bit, still nice and clean. But this morning I felt compelled to change the bandage with required me to moisten it to remove the tube gauze. I realize now, I should have let that go for 2 to 3 days. The application I did this morning is not as neat as yesterday and it's oozing out the white blood cells. Which is good to promote healing and scab up. I may take it off and redo it later, that get is great stuff. It's not bleeding, throbbing or discolored in anyway, but what I had going on, I felt would have healed like a good stich job in 3 to 5 days.

So there you go, my finger is now on the mend, I'm going to take a break from the house, was planning on patching and drywalling the kitchen, but I think I need a few days. The wound will most definitely heal, but I don't need to be getting grit and debris in my wound as it's healing.

I just did something similar slicing Italian Beef. Not healing as fast as I'd like. Was a hand slicer and got my finger on the edge of the beef. Sharp enough to cut some of my finger nail off along with most the tip of my finger. Got to bone pretty sure, but I just wrapped it immediately and cleaned it later after the blood clotted. So far so good, but fuck finger injuries. Probably needed stitches but I give zero fucks. It's not infected.

Moral of the story is get an electric meat slicer. I'm hoping it's good by the new year. It was a bad f'ing cut. Finally able to get my K's and I's right on the keyboard. Kind of relearning typing after a week of using my right ring finger to type that shit.

I got a cut a year ago on my right ring finger, split the tip to the bone. Urgent care did put three stitches in, and cleaned it well enough that no infection started. It still feels weird tho, a year later. Pretty sure there was nerve damage. Most of the time I don’t notice it tho.

I started this thread was less about me informing everyone I got cut.
The real intent is to sing the praises of the wound gel and tubular bandage with the handy wound splint. But battle wound stories are welcome.
I feel just as good as if I got stiches, I just reworked my poor dressing attempt from this morning. It's back to looking solid again.

Wookie I feel your pain on the typing issue, I'm having to use my left ring finger for all of my pinky keys. Lots of typos, lots of corrections.

If I can save someone from seeing a woke Doctor and Nurse, doing subpar sutures on anyone, then I'll be happy.

The wound gel is amazing stuff it really is. It dries and hardens like egg whites and the tube gauze is stuck to my finger. The mesh from the gauze being practically glued to my finger is keeping the gash together like it was stitched.

Gollee. Sorry for the injury, but it's a good thing it wasn't your bird finger.

Few years ago when paddle boarding, a metal link on a bag tore a hole in the back of my arm. I didn't even know until I was showering and felt something funny. That back of the arm place isn't very sensitive for some reason. I poked my finger into a hole into the muscle, weird, pretty deep. I just scrubbed it for a few days in the shower and it healed up fine with no special treatment.

Suggest getting some calendula. That stuff is amazing at healing cuts and getting rid of infection. Glad you did it yourself, that ER sounds scary.

I cut off a portion of my thumb using a mandolin to slice potatoes about a year ago. I wrapped it and waited 2 days to go to the Dr. They changed the bandage, gave me a tetanus shot and charge me $500. They used some type of gauze to cover the portion of the thumb where I sliced off and told me it would fall off on it's own in about 10-12 days. Sure enough, it did. Pretty amazing gauze.

Can anyone tell me what it was and where I can purchase it?

No this one, the Chitosan is the beneficial sealing ingredient. I would try the one you listed if it serves the same purpose. The big revelation here is that the gel and plaster wound sealers are far superior over the bandages and band aids that give way soon after applying. The tubular bandages are also awesome, the includes plastic splint helps keep the wounded digit from flexing the wound open. I also got a finger wound kit, which included splints and straps to keep one finger tethered to another for stability. But I haven't needed any of it yet. This splint for my particular wound is working like a champ. Still no throbbing, inflammation or redness.

Should go to an urgent care clinic if not emergency room

They can clean it up and prescribe antibiotics

The clinics where I live in Florida panhandle charge $130 if you do not have insurance for urgent care like stitches, xrays, Rx prescription, flu treatment, etc

holes to patch my holes in my plaster

Have you figured out how to use a brad nailer on plaster and lathe without blowing out a quarter sized chunk of material?

I have a shit ton of trim that needs replacement but I haven't figured out how to drive in finishing nails without collateral damage.
12   Tenpoundbass   2022 Dec 5, 6:02pm

I have something called lathe rock under my plaster. I have a layer of what looks like durarock with 1/2 inch holes drilled every 6 inches apart. Mortar over that then a layer of plaster. I would love to make a thread on restoration plaster. I am just now getting to patching the holes in the plaster. My plaster is 3/4 inch thick. I am using two ply 3/8 drywall patches. The thickest I can find dry all is 5/16, I don't want to fill in a swimming pool of joint compound

So I am doubling up 3/8ths drywall so my patch seams are even. But what I would like to use the original materials but I can't find lathe roc anywhere or if they still make it, I could drill the 3/8ths sheet rock to hold the mortar especially with only having holes to patch and a 8 by 10 area in my kitchen to finish and tie back into the plaster.

The thing is with the drywall patch, I only have to screw the drywall side on the furring strips, the plaster board is rigid enough that by time i tape the seams it will hold on its own.

Funny. When I had my finger ripped apart by a piece of broken glass the doc in the ER who was stitching it up was giddy with excitement at the opportunity to practice his craft.

What year was this house built? Are the walls original or did the durarock replace orginal lathe?

We know a contractor that works on old houses and he never touches plaster - he goes over it with 1/4 sheet rock on the walls or 1/2" on ceiling. He says it's not worth disturbing because it's full of asbestos.

I haven't found a similar (DuraRock) wall in our (1927) house but I have found that the bathroom floors have a 2 - 3 inch mud bed instead of a wood sub floor. This requires that the joists underneath are only 2x4" (real 2x4 - not todays 1.5x3.5"). I was going to jack hammer this mud out and replace the joists until I read that this is still a better solution than modern cement board over sub floors.

Sorry to de-rail your thread into an 'this old house' discussion. I was appropriately aghast at your injury.

I said in this thread I would love to start a thread on plaster preservation.
People that would knock plaster walls are for two reasons, either they know you're not going to find anyone that can do it, or they honestly believe that cheap inferior drywall is better.

My kitchen was on fire for over 30 minutes, it never burned through the plaster into the ceiling rafters.. Every seam was mudded and held together with wire mesh, thick heavy wire mesh. I really would like to give it a go, but this being my opportunity to practice I would hate to have an amature mess on my hands, where as at least drywall would at least look right. I opened a wall to incorporated the back part of the house, it was a separate 1br apt, when I bought it. I managed to plaster the new opening to match the texture of the walls in that back room. But the front of the house is smooth and wont be as forgiving.

That's costing at least $500 around here. I'd go to the Minute Clinic type places if they offer wound care.
20   Tenpoundbass   2022 Dec 6, 7:20am

My finger is mending very well, still no pain or throbbing, and no redness. the dressing I put on it, is still holding the gash together.
No need to go to an urgent care.

Wound gels are a game changer, in the past I always considered stitches for wounds, only because band aids and bandages get wet and bloody and work their way off, the wound gets dinged and bleeds and oozes stuff, making it easier to get infected. Had these products been around at the time. I would have only gotten stitches on one of the 4 or 5 times I have gotten stitches.
Stiches aren't magical, they just keep the wound closed, so it heals faster. I have achieved that objective with what I have done.
21   Tenpoundbass   2022 Dec 6, 7:51am

The thing I keep calling a wound splint is actually the applicator for the tube gauze, seems I'm using it off label.
The instructions also says it's for minor cuts.
I don't think the medical cartel cabal, would allow the product to be sold with instructions for the way I'm using it.
I'm robbing them of their pound of flesh for my misery.

I'm supposed to put the applicator on my finger, roll gauze over it, then pull the applicator out, then put those balloon looking thingies over my finger, cutting air and circulation off, so that it gets red throbbing and aggravated so I am sure to run to the emergency room.

But instead I just pulled the gauze over my finger like a sock, placed the applicator(splint) over that, then used the rubber balloon thingy over the applicator and rolled down just enough to where it pinches the two sides enough to keep it on my finger, so it doesn't go flying across the room when I point.

So my stitches story. Surfed a fun board at Cardiff Reef, which is always packed, and thanks to board length, I was in the thick of the crowd. Went for a wave and saw people dropping in on both sides. Pulled out, but when I pulled my board back, a fin sliced my wrist open. Waited for three hours in emergency for six stitches. I was just out of college at the time, so didn't know most of what I do now.

Always come in with chest pain no matter the ailment with the ER. I walked into an ER waiting room that had 60-80 people waiting in Chicago. They immediately took me to at least get nursing attention. THEN you tell them about your other ailment once you're in a room. You just need to get to a nurse as they do most of the work anyway.

If you're not bleeding out/not clotting then sure, they'd take that. But if you just have a beach towel or something and bleeding is under control they will make you wait hours 10 out of 10 times if they're busy. If they think you're having a heart attack or stroke they take that very seriously unless there was some mass injury event and they're flooded with dying people. Chest pain can be explained away by anxiety or panic attack, not that a doc or nurse should care if you were lying.

my box work, marvel at the service loops. I replaced every wire in my house. From the 14, 12, 10 and 6 wire.

Had a 1 inch rigid pipe in the attic with 2 number 4 wires and a number 6. The two 4s were supplying the 240 to the inside panel, the green number 6 had white tape on it and was being used for the Neutral wire. The Ground was a wire screwed into the back of the old box and ran out back to the plumbing. So if the plumbing on that side of the house was to be replaced with PVC I would have had no ground. I ran 1 3/4 PVC pipe, got 3 number 2 wires and 1 number 6 wire and replaced the 12/24 100 amp box with a 20/40 200 amp box. I reran the AC, water heater, and dryer circuit as well.

A no no, each have to be on their own breaker. I reran the right side out the outside main panel on its own breaker.

I am sure you know what you are doing, but I like connecting the ground buss to a sunken rebar pole using a green wire.

31   Tenpoundbass   2022 Dec 8, 2:41pm

That Lug is huge for 1 or 2 ought, I bent it down to the top ground terminal. It's a number 6 wire, I do need to go back in and wrap it with green tape though.
The reason I bonded the normally Neutral side to be the ground, was I could do that for the ground. I didn't want the Neutral wire getting lose and frayed in the larger lug, so I placed it on the left side with the smaller lug. You want that Neutral wire snug as a bug so everything runs cool and efficient.

32   Tenpoundbass   2022 Dec 8, 3:16pm

And normally a new install I would put these out by the main panel outside.

Grounding Rod driven in the ground.

But they were already there, and the ground wire in the inside panel box is connected to the ground terminal on the outside main panel. The Ground on the outside panel is ground to the grounding rod, and the neutral is bonded to the ground, at the first means of disconnect.

TPB, glad you are OK, sounds like it could have been far worse. Sounds like you are up to your old antics. I have a couple of questions:

1. Why did you cancel your homeowner's insurance after the house was paid off? You could have had a gold-plated policy for the rest of your life, a full, paid-for kitchen remodel, and loss-of-use compensation during construction, all for 1/10 of what it will now cost you to rebuild, plus the opportunity cost of doing the work yourself versus something else. You're lucky actually, if the entire house burned you would be completely SOL.
2. Have you decided to now carry homeowners insurance?
3. Why do you not carry any health insurance? I remember you describing at least one previous bankruptcy due to medical expenses with no health insurance.
4. Are you going to at least have an electrician check your work, since the fire was caused by faulty wiring you previously installed?
34   Tenpoundbass   2022 Dec 11, 9:01pm

!) At 5K a year, I could sock that money away and in just 4 to 5 years, I would have enough to do most extensive repairs. If you have been following along, you would know I was screwed by the ins company after hurricane Irma. My Roof was left leaking for almost 2 years while the ins company tried to sidestep their responsibility. I had a great roofing company that know the Florida Statues and Building codes. I finally got a new roof but it took almost 2 years. Fuck that, I said then the next cataclysm in my home, I'll be in control of when and how I fix my house.

2)No I still wont pay those cock suckers thousands of dollars a year for the privilege to fuck with me, when I need help the most. I get far more value of the premiums by saving or setting aside money I would have otherwise paid the ins Companies. They only exist at the extent that they do, because banks demand their debt slaves inure their collateral asset.

3)Now You're getting pathetic, I never said I filed bankruptcy, tell me when I ever said I filed for bankruptcy? Actually the thread was about me having Gold Insurance my wife caught a bad case of Fibromyalgia or the "yer Crazy Lady!" disease. Which was one of the casualties of Covid another made up, pulled out of the medical establishment's asshole disease that went away when Covid came around. But I digress, I had an awesome company Insurance plan, spared no expense, but yeah, I paid every fucking bill the Doctors and Hospitals sent the insurance company.. If I remember correctly, you and a few other Dimfuck Libtards ridiculed me for deriding Obamacare, when it wasn't supposta kick in until 2 months later. What a fucking hoot and Riot you shits were! How's that Obamacare now huh? I know! That's what I tried to tell your stupid ass!

4)It passed inspection that's all I care about.

IRRC it had something to do with your daughter. That's why you required government assistance to qualify for your home loan. Perhaps I am getting the details wrong, but I do remember you saying you were on government assistance for the medical care and the home loan.
