Every store will convert to something where you can only pick up stuff already ordered and paid for with no access to product to the general public until it's paid for. Of course this will increase labor costs which will be passed on to the consumer.
There used to be an assumption that most people had a built-in moral compass that prevented things like this, but that has slowly eroded away with the entitlement mentality of the past several decades. Now it's you owe me and by golly I'm going to take it.
I'm not understanding the problem with the general jist of the law
Does this also effect mom and pop stores? How much more can the system take before it breaks?
The people in the trailer parks and hoods are crazy in Florida, but in California it's the politicians who are crazy.

Can employees steal without being fired now?
I had leeway to mark things down in the sporting goods department for a high school job. I did. Then I bought it 80% reduced price
It would have been smarter to have a friend do the actual purchasing part.

And just as dishonest while implying your friends are as crooked as you. Do you folks hear yourselves?
I was 17 dude. I'm sure you're perfect.
Hell my gas is paid for by my wife's company and I don't work for it. Thing is it's the little things that aren't technically illegal that people get away with. Wife sells $6,000,000 annually cash and my $2,000 of gas is a nothing burger. And they know.
This new law is yet another push towards communism by the Evan Lows and Richard Pans of the Democrat party. An attempt to vicariously claim via lie that people steal because they are poor and victims of systemic racism, another fabricated fairly tale of the communists.

What happened to comment 21 above?
The stated policy of management was to "let them go and do not confront them."

What is the point of checking receipts at the door then? Just to keep track of how many people stole things?
That comment was definitely a personal insult.

Not at all. At that age I was a total delinquent that stole frequently, but I will admit that those were the acts of a thief. But as an adult I changed my behavior. The issue is not that you were only 17, it is that today you consider the activity you did then as not really stealing, and even today you said you pilfer gas from your wife's employer. Kid's make mistakes, which is why it was my policy was never to prosecute anyone under 18 for shoplifting or pilfering. A adult should have matured to the point of having integrity.
CA raised the grand theft limit to $950 a while back. And now they passed a bill making it illegal for employer to require employees to confront thieves/shoplifters.
For their safety, I don’t think employees should do this anyway and I don’t think it was happening much.
With shoplifting there was always grey area… if I walk out with these, will someone confront me. What risk am I taking by trying to walk out with his iPhone charger?
But with this bill, isn’t it open season? $950 and it’s illegal to try and stop me?
For the record, I don’t give much of a shit about corporations and their profits. However, I’m seeing a lot more shit locked up in stores and store theft is all over nextdoor with people saying that so and so just walked right out without paying.
Thoughts?
You don't think for a moment "am I possibly a kind of shitty person?"
I wouldn't notice spending an extra $2,000 a year, that's why I wouldn't be a thief. It's not about money, it's about personal integrity. Doesn't this even occur to you?

There has always existed a rather thin line that separates our society from the law-abiding to the lawless. That line has now been officially crossed by the lawless, along with those politicians that support them, and the results will be continual chaos.
You straightened your shit out, because of the ramifications of your actions.
How about the company stealing from my wife by not paying her what anyone with those sales numbers makes.
Jealousy of others is a tough pill to swallow.
So now it is reparations? If your wife is not being paid enough, then she should ask for a raise or work for an employer who will pay her more. If no raise is forthcoming and no other employer will pay her more, then she is being paid what she is worth. That is true for any employee.

SB 553, introduced by Silicon Valley’s State Sen. Dave Cortese (D-Cupertino), is described as a bill to prevent and monitor “workplace violence.” But it also includes a provision that “every employer shall establish, implement, and maintain, at all times in all of the employer’s facilities, a workplace violence prevention plan for purposes of protecting employees and other personnel from aggressive and violent behavior at the workplace” that “shall include … [p]rovisions prohibiting the employer from maintaining policies that require employees to confront active shooters or suspected shoplifters.”
As San Francisco Bay Area Fox affiliate KTVU reported, retail associations are furious, believing that the bill will tell potential thieves that they can steal goods at will:
[O]ver 50 organizations, including the California Retailers Association, (CRA) don’t support the bill.
“This bill goes way too far, number one, where I think it will open the doors even wider for people to come in and steal from our stores.”
…
The CRA says if SB 553 becomes law, it will need to apply to all industries and not just retail. They also say most retailers already prohibit regular employees from approaching anyone about stolen merchandise and have some employees who are trained in theft prevention.
“It says no employee can approach someone who is shoplifting. So even if someone is trained on how to deter someone from doing that, now they’re not allowed to approach someone. So, what does that mean? We are opening up the door to allow people to walk into stores, steal and walk out,” Michelin said.
