Colleagues and I have joked about this Chinese menu item for years. Well as it turns out, deep in the coastal Chinese province Zhejiang, in a town called "Dongyang"(I shit you not!) Street vendors collect piss in bucket from young boys, younger than 10. They then use that piss to hard boil eggs, and then sell it back to them as an after school treat.

I wonder if "Only in China!" is a phrase often said in China?

It probably tastes better than 1000 year-old egg...

The Asian market I frequent sales those, what makes it even more gross. It's in a plastic pouch in the unrefrigerated isle. I'd consider it, if it were at least refrigerated. But that would be a moot point though, now wouldn't it? I mean they ferment the egg in a hole in the ground, for years, I don't know why I think it should be refrigerated. But that's how I roll.
